“Unsatisfactory return visit”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed December 1, 2013 via mobile

We had been to Bistro 27 about a year ago for an excellent brunch, so, when we were in Richmond this weekend we decided to go back. Big mistake! I ordered the frittata with onions, mixed peppers, mushrooms and cheddar. My husband ordered the brunch wrap (scrambled eggs, bacon, red peppers).
The frittata was very over cooked and arrived with mushrooms, a bit of bacon, two tiny bits of tomato and three squares of a melted substance that was flavorless but I presume was some sort of cheese look alike, and raw onion scattered on top. Three pieces of potato and some fruit pieces accompanied the dish. The dish was completely without flavor except for the onions!
The wrap contained a few specks of egg, some very hard country ham and a large amount of roasted potatoes in a partially burned wrap.

We would have sent the order back but we had to be somewhere within 40 minutes and the first order took over 1/2 an hour to get to us.

We won't be going back!

“Wow what a place”

Absolutely fabulous Chef with a flair for the dramatic.
Partners of this business are perfectly matched with one tending to the food and the other to customers.
They both make you feel like your the reason for their existence.
Excellently prepared dishes from top to bottom. Local patrons are special, as well.

“All Good!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 6, 2013

We came in tired from traveling and looking for something close to our hotel. Old tripadvisor post (from 2009!) mentioned it, we called, they said, come on in, as you are, we're casual, no worry.

We walked, which at 8:30ish was a little uncertain in the dark, not knowing about the neighborhood,we thought maybe better take a cab back. But we were reassured there was no cause for worry about walking back, and had a wonderful, delicious dinner. We had a great bottle of wine, I requested an appetizer portion of the special pasta (pheasant with butternut squash sage sauce!) which they accommodated even though not on the menu as an appetizer, made my husband's chicken and artichoke dish without butter (special request), bread was different (and yummy), AND dessert was delicious (spiced pear for me, husband had mojito sorbet). Everything is made in house, service was spectacular (thank you Alex).

Our 6 block walk back to the hotel was quick and not worrisome - what a great find. IF you were really, really hungry, and wanted big portions, this might not be the spot of you. But if you want delicious, special, and lighter portions, you won't go wrong!

“A great find in historic Richmond”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 5, 2013

We recently spent the weekend in Richmond for a tour of Virginia Commonwealth University with our son. My wife searched the Web for interesting restaurant options and talked to friends who work and live in Richmond. Bistro 27 was on their 'best of' list.

It is easy to see why. The menu is diverse and the food was fantastic, from appetizers to fish to steak -- with a good wine list. Everyone at our table was very pleased. Service was attentive and friendly, but without the annoying 'hovering' that happens at some nice restaurants. Their space in a remodeled old building has a warm character, with very high ceilings and the historic feel of old Richmond.

A very good find -- and a great value.

“Excellent”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 3, 2013

We go here regularly. Have never had food or service that was less than excellent; often it is outstanding. Decor is modern and a bit stark, but very nice. Noise can be a problem when they are very busy, but it's no worse than many other places. The restaurant is much better than Tarrant's, which is at the other end of the same block.

Not a terrible area, but not the best either. It's on a main street, but parking is a short block away down a side street, which doesn't help. It's very near the November Theater; we always eat there before going to the theater.
