My husband and I took a trip here and found it to be quite fun! We are the outdoorsy type and enjoyed hiking among the river rocks and exploring Belle Island. We were only able to spend about two hours here, so we weren't able to see all that we wanted too. The parking lot was closed when we went...I guess because it was a weekend?? So we had to parallel park in front of some apartments that were really close to an entrance. My advice: wear a good pair of shoes and bring a camera!

The James River trails and over pass over the river are well worth spending a day exploring! This is one of the few rivers, I know of, that you can just walk out on to the rocks and picnic etc.

It is also historical as it housed a prison of Union soldiers during the Civil War.

Great place to bike, hike swim or just walk about!

There is a little beach there and there is an edge where you can jump into the water. There is also a boardwalk with historical events written on the bottom and a little stand with info. on the paper.

With Belle Island and Brown's Island, plenty to do and see here. Parking can be a problem, but we walk from a nearby neighborhood. Bathrooms are a bit scarce but available. Some shade, some sun. Nice places for sunning on rocks in the river. Lots of people, strollers, dogs, etc. Usually nowhere to buy snacks/drinks so pack water, etc.

Beautiful river, especially thru downtown. There are some dangerous hidden paths, especially during the week when it's not so busy. The river itself has warnings not to swim although many do. Strong hidden currents abound.

I would highly recommend the raft trip. That was lots of fun and exercise with a large group of people.
