Everyone should check out this gem in Richmond, VA. Whether you are a history buff or not, its not an expensive field trip. A trip to this museum will open you mind to historical curiosity.

We enjoyed our visit to this museum which is quite informative and well spread in two floors.
It very well covers the history of Virginia through good displays and visuals. There are a number of video shows to give a feel of how Virginia imerged with the entry of immigrants, coming in of labour to help in growing and export of tobacco.
It has some unique maps and flow charts that make the visit interesting.
There is good library to read books and enrich your knowledge on the development of Virginia.
The only downside of this place is that it has no cafeteria. But that’s no issue since the Virginia museum of fine arts is just two minutes walk away and has a nice restaurant.

Perhaps, I am spoiled. I am a history buff and have been to the NC, IN and MN state history museums. They were all great and all blew away the VA state history museum. We were in and out in under an hour. The exhibits were disjointed, no flow, little attempt at story telling. You just kind of ran into different time periods, different stories without any rhyme or reason. Way too much history not or barely covered like say slavery, or early settlers. They did have a traveling WW1 exhibit, but we had seen it at the NC State History museum.

There are so many museums in Richmond that I didn't know what to expect. This museum is right next to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts. There is something for everybody and there are many interactive exhibits. I didn't have time for everything and plan to return at some time.

I didn't expect to enjoy this, not being from Virginia, but it was wonderful! I could spend a lot more time there. The new art exhibit was great.
