Hotel Flamingo
Reviewed October 5, 2006

I stayed at Hotel Flamingo for the last week in September. This being my 2nd visit, having stayed a week in early May 2004, I wondered if I would enjoy it as much as before. But I needn't had worried as I thoroughly enjoyed my second visit. After a bit of bad weather in the first 36 hours, the weather soon settled down into lovely late warm summer days and nights.

Don't go to the Flamingo if you are looking for a raving time with bars, clubs, shops and restaurtants in the immediate locality. It is in a fairly isolated location but right on the beach so no roads to worry about. But if you want a relaxing time, take a good book and enjoy a comfy lounger by a great pool (with paddling area for youngsters); soft, blonde, silky sandy beach and good swimming; good and plentiful (although not brilliant) food and comfortable, tastefully furnished bedrooms and common rooms surrounded by very well maintained, landscaped gardens, then go to the Flamingo. There is a beautiful spa with beauty treatment rooms (at a price) plus a gym and tennis courts. The very large public beach immediate adjacent to the hotel was well kept and clean, about the best I have seen in Italy. Being at the end of the season it was very quiet - I guess it may be very different in high summer.

When I stayed, the visitors were primarily British, German, Czech and Hungarian. I was aware that a small number of the older British contingent were disappointed that there was so little to do other than chill out. But I suspect that they may have been on Saga or similar holidays where they are constantly entertained and going on excursions which are inbuilt into the holiday package. Anyway, the Hotel can book you on to a series of daily excursions around Sardinia if you can pull yourself away from the pool and beach. There is also a little bus which stops outside the Hotel about 6 or 7 times a day which can take you to the fabulous Chia beaches or the Roman ruins at Nora in about 15 minutes. You can find the Bus Timetable at the Concierge Desk.

Also, unlike the majority of beaches in Italy, the Flamingo's is not regimented as such and you can move the deck chairs around the beach. The bar area has one side inside and one side outside, leading down to the pool with plenty of comfortable seating and tables. Even at the end of September, it was warm enough to sit outside after dinner, take an expresso and listen to the musicians playing live but synthesized music until around midnight.

If money is not an issue, I would choose to stay in one of their newly bulit deluxe Nidi appartments set in landscape gardens about 50 yards from the beach. As it was, through Medhotels website, I paid £40 a night half-board for a very comfortable, reasonably large, standard single room with excellent air conditioning and a balcony with a side sea view. This, I think, was very good value for money as I had seen the Flamingo featured in a couple of up market holiday brochures and the prices quoted were considerably greater even allowing for BA flights and airport transfers.

One thing though, on arrival in Sardinia, please don't be put off by the industrial landscape that meets you shortly after leaving Cagliari. You don't see any of this once you near the Flamingo.

Finally you could find it cheaper to book a taxi transfer to/from the Hotel/Cagliari Airport direct with the hotel in advance (about 60 euros one way instead of 85 euros) plus a much better quality vehicle. If hiring a car the drive from the airport is relatively straight forward - about 40 mins. It would be faster but for the most part the road is a single carriageway with low speed limits and very few overtaking spots. It must be a very slow drive in high season!

We had a great time at this hotel, which was of a good standard. We booked directly, having seen it in a travel agent's brochure, saving money and the hotel gave us an extra night free as we stayed for part of our honeymoon.

Accomodation:
We stayed in an "Il Nidi" suite, overlooking a pretty and quiet garden area and the mountains. The large room had an outside "spa bath" which had a sliding glass door from the bathroom overlooking the garden area and mountains, which was great, but would have been more romantic if more than one person could fit in it! The room was immaculately clean when we arrived, with modern furnishings. The room was serviced daily by cheerful maids with fresh towels every day.

Food:
We found the food to be of a high quality at all times. The buffet breakfast included self-service bread, pastries, fruit, cereals, yoghurt, ham, cheese, toast, eggs and mini sausages etc, with plenty of tea, coffee & hot chocolate served by the waiters. The lunch menu included a self-service salad and fresh fish and pasta dishes which were served by the waiters. The evening meal included a starter, a main course of 3 or 4 different meat and fish dishes as well as a vegetarian dish, all served by the waiters and a choice of self-service desserts which were lovely.

Our waiters spoke good English, were polite and attentive, even though the dining hall got fairly busy at times. You could also keep bottled wine and water from one evening to the next, which was refridgerated overnight by the waiters.

Location:
The hotel is fairly rural, so either hire a car or use the regular local buses to visit Pula or Chia. Pula has a buzzy feel in the evenings with lots of boutique shops, bars, ice cream shops and restaurants (head for the main square) and a fab restaurant - Zio Dino (take your Italian phrasebook!). Last bus back to the hotel is midnight, so don't miss it as there are no taxis in town and if you want to order one from the hotel it costs 15 Euros, as they come from Cagliari.

The hotel beach (private) is beautiful and clean with fine sand, although getting into the sea was sometimes tricky, as it's got some huge stones. Plenty of sun loungers too, with good shelter on the beach for those who don't want to be in direct sunlight. The beach is well attended by lifeguards and is next door to a public beach, which was also very clean and surprisingly quiet.

Pool / Facilities:
The pool decking area was very clean with an adult's and a kids' pool. Again, plenty of sun-loungers available. Good gym, tennis etc. This hotel is great for couples who want to chill out, for families and for general relaxing. The only downside for us was the evening entertainment. Although it was nightly, some of the "bands" were pretty rubbish and we found it far more entertaining to go into Pula to the bars! However, if you have kids, there is a nightly children's disco outside.

We really enjoyed our stay at this hotel and would recommend it to anyone who wants a relaxing beach holiday with friendly staff.

We had a lovely holiday at the Hotel Flamingo, but there are a couple of things to take into consideration.

We were originally allocated a room in the main building, which was by no means a 4 star quality room. It was clean and fairly comfortable, but the doors are not air tight which allowed the occasional mosquito into the room, and the walls/ceilings seem to be paper thin as you could clearly hear our very loud neighbours, and even worse - the chairs from the restaurant below dragging on the floor when breakfast starts at 7.30am.

After being rudely awoken 2 mornings in a row, I asked reception if they had any rooms in the apartment blocks outside so that we could escape the noise of the main building. As luck would have it the only one available was one of the Superior I Nidi rooms, which we were given at no extra cost. The room was very nicely decorated, with a huge balcony and a view of the mountains. It was cleaned & tidied every day and more than made up for the bad start to the week, if we went again we would definitely pay the extra as it made a huge difference to our holiday.

As well as the kindness shown to us with the room, the rest of the staff at the hotel were also very helpful, cheerful and made us feel welcome.

The food ranges from average to very good, but if you have a car at your disposal its worth having lunch instead of dinner sometimes so that you can explore some of the nearby restaurants. (Take a phrase book as a few dont have English menus!)

There is nothing within walking distance so I really would advise hiring a car from Elmas airport. The route to Pula via the SS195 is signposted well and there are signs for the hotel when you are nearby. Its also worth buying a travel guide or two. We had two of the well known ones and they give you pointers about nearby beaches (Chia had the best ones, but none are bad), restaurants and local attractions that you can drive to if you have a car. I wouldnt fancy getting public transport as some places would be hard to find on foot from the bus stop.

We booked flights, hotel & car separately and it cost us £540 each for a week. The same thing cost £730 in one brochure so its worth shopping around.

Anyway back to the hotel. The pool area is really nice (and kept immaculately clean), and a couple of steps further is the beach. Here there are deckchairs and shaded areas for use of hotel residents.

In summary the I Nidi rooms are great, the staff were nice, the food varies, the pool & the beach are excellent and i'd recommend it (with a car so that you can explore). We had a lovely holiday and although we generally dont go to the same place twice, we've already spoken about returning for a long weekend if we fancy a quick getaway as everything seems so hassle free over there!

It is now nearly a year since we stayed at this hotel which seems to have very mixed reviews. We have enjoyed three other holidays since then and stayed at marvellous hotels with great staff.
In our view the Flamingo was extremely disappointing. The staff were generally unhelpful and the hotel was badly in need of good management. There was absolutely no commitment to customer care. The food in the understaffed, noisy and chaotic dining room was monotonous and mediocre.
The hotel was scruffy and rundown and the pool deck required attention. There was refurbishment going on all over the place and we only hope that this has lead to an improvement in standards.
We would certainly not go back.

Visited the Hotel Flamingo in the last week of September. We were blessed with fantastic weather - it got hotter each day, consequently didn't need to leave the pool-side unless it was for a stroll along the beach !

Was pleased to discover that the hotel looks just like it does on the website.

We had a superior sea-view room which was large, clean and immaculate with an enormous bathroom. Mini-bar, large TV and safe included. Fresh towels and bed linen changed daily by friendly maids.

Food was lovely, buffet breakfast and a choice at dinner along with a buffet dessert (gorgeous ice-cream). As long as you filled up on the large starters, which I believe is the Italian way, the main course was a perfect sized portion.

All the hotel staff were polite, spoke good English and appreciated us trying to speak Italian. The pool area is washed down every morning and the hotel was always sparkling clean.

Although there is NOTHING within walking distance to do, if you want a relaxing holiday - which we did - the location was ideal, white sandy beach & clear blue sea a minutes stroll from our room, no fights over the sun loungers by the pool, snacks & fresh fruit available all day, what more can you want ???

Would definately return and recommend to others.
