Once you find this property, you won't believe it. Formerly an LBJ hideaway, the rolling hills divulge a huge gallery/studio in a quonset hut housing Benini's stupendous works, set amid acres which serve as appropriate settings for outdoor sculptures by Benini and others. You can follow Benini's career as he dabbled with patriotic themes, romantic roses, abstracts, and on and on.
The real treasure here is of course Benini himself and his charming wife Lorraine, photographer extraordinaire. They are both so very interesting.
Lorraine maintains a butterfy garden just outside the studio.
They welcome you into their property with true Texan hospitality, and do not charge for this opportunity.
Look for the stainless steel longhorn at a crossroads just outside of Johnson City on the way to Fredericksburg and turn there. Follow the road almost 2 miles to Stelle d'Oro.
Have fun y'all.

As you leave Johnson City on the way to Fredricksburg, keep looking to your left. When you get to the big steel bull made from motorcycle and car parts, turn left. About 4 1/2 miles later, through some really scenic hill country, there's a small sign leading you to a really interesting experience. The road to the quonset-hut type gallery is lined with big sculptures, and the gallery is filled with treasures by Benini and others. The artist and his wife are usually on-site to answer questions and show you around. From the gallery, pick up your drumsticks by the door and head out on the free tour of the ranch. Near the beginning you'll see an earthen dam down on the right (the pond is dry because of the drought.) On the dam is a set of huge cornucopia drums you can bang on and be heard all over the valley. Continue down sculpture-lined gravel roads to the top of the hill and look out over the valley. Be sure you return your drumsticks when you return. Don't hesitate to visit the interesting bathroom in the gallery. This is a fantastic free attraction in this part of the country. For a great culinary experience, go back to Johnson City and have dinner at the Silver K, or spend the night at the Chantilly Lace B&B. Don't forget the Texas Hills winery in Johnson City. And for breakfast, you can be served by a barrel racing winner at the Hill Country Cupboard, unless you're at Chantilly Lace, where breakfast is a gourmet treat!

Acres of wonderful sculptures and a great sudio with paintings and sculptures make this worth a trip. If you're near the Texas Hill Country, don't miss it. It's off hwy 290 west of Johnson City. Turn at the longhorn sculture and continue for about 6 miles to the sudio. See their website for more directions (http://sculptureranch.com/index.htm). We met Mr Benini at the gallery and he told us how to see all the sculptures and how to get to his house at the top of the hill. The view from there is wonderful. And there's no chanrge to view any of it.
