“Not bad but heavily overpriced”

We stayed here only for one night. The hotel looks amazing on its website and facebook profile. They try hard to get a modern design and lifestlye touch paired with Sardinian tradition and art. The hotel is bigger than it seems and the way to the room is far and with a lot of stairs (no elevator). The rooms are kind of nice but with some ourdated details. Its far from perfect (especially for the price). There's also no wifi except for the lobby (1h password limit) and the mobile network is weak in the area. That's a problem if you got to check some work or want to update your social media. Thw garden, bar and pool were beautiful but some of the garden furniture and pillows were a little bit dirty from the weather. The pool is very large (25m!). We had half pension and the menue was really good although served a little speedy for our taste so you feel quite filled up. You can pick whatever you want from thw menue with antipasti buffet, primi, soup, secondi and dolce buffet. Last but not least you are getting wonderful views of the surrounding landscape with some very big mountains.

We had difficulty finding it but worth it and leave your cases in the car for the staff to carry up the hill. We had a good room (53) with four poster bed, lounge area and lovely bathroom. It was more central than others which are scattered all over the place as is one of the bars and some of the lovely open air lounge areas with mountain views.
A bit like staying on a posh old farm.
Breakfast not brill but a great view and we had good food over three nights at dinner. My suckling pig was great but others did have more crackling than meat. A friend had a steak (done on the open fire) and it was huge and tasty.
Large open pool was a bit chilly.
Overall a place for relaxing for 2 or 3 days.
If you go in the Autumn check whats happening for Autunno in Barbagia as when we went there was a great village event in all the courtyards of Oliena-the nearest town well worth seeing.

We had two nights at Su Gologone. Fantastic property with superb views from the restaurant and very stylish bar. A little shabby chic in places, but all the better for that.
Dinner - excellent local cuisine, service superbly efficient with a personal touch- great combination.
Want a slightly quirky place with character, fantastic views, good food and some rally nice people? Sounds like you should visit Su Gologone.

It all looks fancy in the pictures in the internet, but the hotel has definetely seen its best days. Some refurnishing is required here and there. Also all the promises about excursions and sport facilities/possibilities sound better than they really are. We stayed in the hotel off main season, that might had had a negative impact. Still, offering "bike excursions" (with 2 city bikes and 2 mountain bikes, of which one had flat tire for the whole time during our stay) without any interest and professional equipment available is a no go. Also the spa offering was more limited than you would think based on the internet offering
The personnel in the reception spoke partially no English and seemed to have more interest in surfing in the internet in the backoffice than taking care of the guests and their questions.
Food was average, service in restaurant good, nevertheless you cannot really get the feeling of a nice, individual dinner - it is more for the bus tourists and the big mass looking for the fast sardinian feeling. Same applies to the breakfast - first come, first serve; no re-fills of the empty baskets, unfortunately hectic atmosphere. We ended up driving to the coast in two nights to have a relaxed, good quality dinner in an individual and nice atmosphere and to avoid the tourist feel.
Positive was the good quality coffee machine in the room and the different terraces for a nice drink in the early evening.
All in all not worth the money, but a nice location to start mountain/seaside excursions - as long as you can organize it by yourself

Upgrade on arrival very welcome and unexpected. Overall a pleasant and relaxing stay with only a few minor grumbles relating to size of shower and average food quality.
Lovely location and very friendly staff. Access somewhat difficult from car parking due to steps and cobbles but staff offered help.

If you want an atmospheric and 'different' hotel then this is great and we really enjoyed the change of pace and style on offer.

when it is the second time you stay in a hotel (the first time was 13 years ago) and you were very satisfied, you set your expectations high and you can compare. Su Gologone is no longer what is was to be. It has become an industry, taking advantage of their efforts in the past. It could need some refurbishments specially on telecommunication infrastructure, plumbery and electricity. Wifi (very slow) is only available in the reception area and in one bar area. Seen the long waiting times at the reception desk, the restaurant and the bar, I have the impression the hotel is understaffed.
The so called best restaurant of the region: its strongest point is the marvellous view it offers. The food is of an acceptable level but there are much better addresses in the close neighbourhood.
In case you can appreciate a room with only 1 available power supply to charge phones or tablets, no wireless or lan connection, a bathroom that floods when emptying the bathtub, I recommend this address.

Room Tip: Ask for a room on the top floor at the end of a corridor in case you are a light sleeper.

I really loved this place for so very many reasons. This is not a five star super-slick ritzy operation, it is a beautiful 4+ star operation in the middle of utterly rustic and stunning mountains (with -i hasten to add a 30 minute drive to a port where you can hire a boat and access boat-only stunning (!!) crystal clear aqua turquoise beaches). It is a great place but not for folks who want the more Five star alliance/ Savoy uber creature comforts. It is very comfortable and an experience. More below.

To the hotel. It is country and with that all the fantastic things that go along with it.
The rooms are simple, clean and cool. We ended up behind (a lovely) fig tree that blocked the mountain view but we were immediately moved when we asked to a very nice new area. The staff a lovely and kind and GENUINE, there again, is no high end 'slickness' with a tip in mind but a genuine wish to please and help. The grounds are extensive beyond anything you can see on the website and are great for exploring with families or as a couple. There are lots of little private nooks and crannies. So much space but you can always find privacy! I loved the vegetable and herb gardens and tomatoes benefiting from the luncheon mists- though do watch out fo the sprinklers at night... ! :).

Activities:
They are extensive! The obvious swimming in what (yes has a few bugs but!..) feels like you are swimming in a friend's sweet water pool (aka less of the harsh chemicals than a normal hotel Cl pool). There is a formidable hike up to an ancient ruin, the boats to the beautiful beaches along the coast, the natural spring that boast over 131 M ++ in depth, Kayaking in the River (Very gentle - smooth enough to take children), LOADS of interesting artwork and just eating some seriously good food/pasta, spit roast pig, goat, beef, etc.

We also happened upon a gig at the bar of the springs (these are 5mins walk from the hotel) and had some insanely good wine (very young but still good and without the tannins) and even crazier (STRONG!!) cocktails in the bar area overlooking the stars (and the bats!- very cool). There is a free astronomy session on Saturday (?) evenings and if your are into crafts they have classes and wine tasting (a craft of its own). Granted much of this comes at a price but in actuality it is nominal (£15 for 2-3 hours kayaking and none of the crazy litigious paperwork of other places- rustic pleasure!) and more food than you can eat in the 'dining evenings' (aka Roast and bread evenings) and a great menu for reasonable prices.

I thoroughly recommend this place its casual fun, good food and for all of the activities at your fingertips. The staff are lovely and will do what they can to make your stay as good as possible- there are a number there who are family of the owners- so they do try! I think go with only the expectation that there is lots of 'natural stuff' to do and it is rural OR if you can manage- go with no expectation at all apart from good weather! Next time- I will seek out sailing / chartered boats and spend more time on the coast nearby and look for a great camping overnight hike thrown in! It is Mountains and Beach!! What more could you want?
