“Relaxing week away”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 26, 2014

Our decision to go to Sardinia was a very last minute one but based on previous reviews that we had read, we were optimistic. We had previously holidayed alot in the south of France and Corsica but Sardinia was a new experience.
We had also not booked a package deal for such a long time but it was on this occasion a pleasant experience. When we arrived at the hotel, we were warmly greeted by the reception staff and checking in was a stress free process. When we went to our room, we quickly realised that we had been checked into the wrong room. When we approached reception to inform them of this fact they were very apologetic and did everything they could to accommodate us in the room we had booked. The rooms were light and airy and very well decorated. Our room was at the front of the hotel (311) and had wonderful views over the bay.
The hotel itself is new and I have say very, very clean, which is always a positive. It is located on a hill but it overlooks the bay and has some amazing views which are beautiful especially in the early morning and also as the sun sets. There is a shuttle service which takes into town and collects you again to bring you back to the hotel. On occasion, we really enjoyed the walk both into and out of town as it allowed us to really experience the are of Cala Gonnone.
I have to say that we were very satisfied with both the range and quality of food offered both at breakfast and dinner time. Breakfast offered a variety of hot and cold food and also hot and cold drinks which I felt catered for all palates. Again, at dinner, it was lovely to eat al fresco on the terrace and we were very satisfied with both the range and quality of food offered. It was lovely to see a selection of hot and cold food, fish and meat dishes and the various accompaniments served with each. We especially loved the Sardinian night which was a very special moment when the local singers performed on the terrace. As with all establishments, they are often only as good as the staff they employ. We found all staff to be welcoming and friendly from the reception desk to the girls in the restaurant. A big thank you to Maria for her speaking with us in French and to the lovely Annalise who was very good in speaking with us in English. Sadly our Italian is non-existant but we managed to get by and even learnt a few words for our next visit.
The pool at the Brancamaria is of a very good size and has excellent views over the bay at Cala Gonnone. I do agree that it would have been better if the pool bar had been open during the day for drinks and light refreshments but that is something to think about for the future. As I said, we had booked a last minute week away and we were very glad that we chose this wonderful hotel and we will certainly be returning next year.

Room Tip: Rooms to the front have the best view and opt for a superior room.

- We had pre booked half board for the duration of our stay. Again for a hotel that is advertised as luxury the food was far from this. The breakfast was poor and had a lack of choice, and the evening meals were diabolical to say the least. You did not offer much of a choice of meals, and catered poorly for vegetarians. I think on one evening the only choice of main meal was suckling pig. What is a guest supposed to do if they do not eat pork, or in my case are vegetarian? The food was very bland and not what I expected in Sardinia. On a couple of occasions, the waitresses even managed to get my order wrong despite there only being a couple of options. Apart from two nights, we ate down in the town centre where the choices were abundant, and of a very high standard. Thankfully this restored my faith in the Sardinian food which is so highly spoken of. Unfortunately your hotel failed to represent this. We had budgeted accordingly for this holiday as we were under the impression that we would not need to spend additional funds on food. As we soon realised, this was not to be the case. We both found the food options of a very poor standard so were forced to make the decision to eat out.

- There was no relaxing atmosphere by the pool. Although the pool was of a great size and it was kept clean and tidy, but it could have done with some chilled music just the give it more ambiance. The bar was never opened up by the pool so all guests were made to come down to the hotel bar which was in a different building to be able to get any drinks. We were not allowed to take any hot drinks to the pool so were restricted to just having cold drinks. We also found that we were not allowed to take any food or even small snacks to the pool. This meant that we had to keep coming down to the hotel bar for any sort of refreshment which is not making the hotel guests feel comfortable and relaxed. I think it would have been a nice idea to maybe have one of your bar staff approach the pool side every now and again to offer guests refreshments. This would make people feel so much more welcome and like the hotel staff was being attentive.

- We noticed that there was no iron provided in our hotel room. When calling down to reception to ask what we can do about this, we were point blankly told that there was nothing that can be done. Obviously this lack of response took us back a bit! It was quite rude and very dismissive! When we asked what hotel guests do if they need something ironed, your reception staff then suggested that they could iron items for us but for a rate of EUR2.00 per item. This was not stated anywhere in the hotel, or room description so after paying so much for this hotel we were not expecting to have to pay for something as simple as ironing. May I suggest that you provide an iron and board for your guests, especially in deluxe rooms? We then also were told that we needed to pay EUR2.00 for use of a pool towel as guests are not permitted to use the towels provided in the hotel room. Can I ask why you are charging these extras? Especially as the majority of poolside towels that you provided had holes in them and looked tatty!

- The location of the hotel wasn’t brilliant and certainly wouldn’t have been suitable for the elderly, of families with young children. There was a free shuttle bus provided but the last one back to the hotel was at 19:10. We felt that this was quite early as most people would not have wanted to have their evening meal by this time so it was forcing guests to feel like they had to rush. As the hotel is located on a busy main road there was no pavements until you got further down the road. Traffic was very fast on this road and commonly came haring round the bends. This, especially at night made this road very dangerous to walk up which was the only route to the hotel. We did not feel safe, and this was the only means of getting back to the hotel as the free shuttle bus stops early and there are no taxi's in the town centre.

- There was a lack of information regarding local tours that we could do. Apart from a couple of local boat trips, and some limited information about Dorgali, there was nothing else. I later found out that we could have seen some amazing sights, one of which being a canyon on the island. I found this out from another tourist whilst in the town centre. We were also advised to go to a local festival which was being held in Dorgali on the Friday evening (15th Aug). The hotel receptionist advised us that if we wanted to stay for dinner at the hotel that this would not be a problem as we could pay EUR10.00 per person for a return shuttle bus which would be able to take us there at 20:15 and bring us back to the hotel at 22:30. When we arrived to this festival, we were advised that the parade was already over and that we would have to wait for the dancers. This also didn’t happen so we spent over 2 hours in a small village with nothing happening apart from a few confectionary stalls. I spoke to the hotel owner when we arrived back at the hotel to advice that we had been misinformed about the timings of the local festival, and instead of listening to me she became very agitated and proceeded to try and put her point across in Italian which of course I can’t understand. This was eventually left at the shuttle rate being reduced to EUR5.00 per person but not without a reluctant huff and heavy sigh from the owner! Not very professional in our opinion.

- Lastly, on the morning that we were due to check out we asked to settle our room bill. We were presented with an A4 piece of paper with a summary per day of what we supposedly owed. I asked for a daily breakdown which for some reason could not be given. When I asked for the receipts that we had to sign for after every extra, the owner reluctantly gave them over. I basically wanted to go over every receipt and add them up for myself which I have every right to do. This was purely because the bill seemed rather high. After adding these up I tried to explain that they had over charged us by about EUR30.00. The receptionist and hotel owner wasn’t pleased with this so proceeded to stand there and attempt to add them up again in front of me. I explained that this was not a great way to end the holiday and not a good way to leave a lasting impression with the guests. After hearing this, the hotel owner rolled her eyes, screwed up the room bill in front of us, threw it in the bin and said in a very abrupt manor 'so we take EUR50.00 off then!' and then stormed off. This made both of us feel very uncomfortable and unwelcome. It was done in front of other guests staying at the hotel.

I wouldn't recommend anyone to stay here.

In spite of being a frequent traveller and a regular user of Trip Advisor I have never previously written a review. However the Hotel Brancamaria provided such a enjoyable experience that I felt that I should share my thoughts. I fully endorse all that has been said in previous reviews regarding the quality of the hotel and the variety of the food. Yes the hotel is at the top of a hill but don't treat that as a possible negative. It makes for great views from the hotel and it does not take long to walk into the town centre and to the beaches. The shuttle bus is free and frequent but on most days we elected to walk down to the beach and then back up to the hotel.( I am retired and I need the exercise!) In the week we stayed there was a great mix of guests from Italy, Spain and France which really added to the holiday experience. Ultimately what makes the Hotel Brancamaria truly special is the customer care.....the staff really do provide a welcome as warm as the Sardinian sun.

Room Tip: Opt for a sea view

The service at this hotel was excellent. The chef catered for the specific needs of our daughter ( a gluten free diet) by making excellent, individual meals at no extra cost. If you want fresh, excellent quality, Sardinian food, this is the place for you.The service was friendly and nothing was too much trouble. The rooms were very clean, the pool was lovely and we had a fantastic holiday.

Room Tip: You could request a sea view room, but all of the rooms are good and very clean.

We stayed for a week in early August at Hotel Brancamaria in Cala Gonone and had a great time. The whole team at the hotel is great - such friendly and welcoming staff who go went of their way to make our visit special. The rooms were lovely and clean and the pool area was never overcrowded and a great place to relaxing. The hotel is about a 15 minute walk out of town - downhill on the way - but the minibus service ensures this is not a problem.
The food at the hotel was plentiful and of a good quality. There was a special Sardinian meal on the Tuesday and a seafood menu on Friday.
All in all a lovely holiday in a lovely part of the island and looked after by a great team of people.

Room Tip: We had a room overlooking the pool. Rooms on the other side will have a view of the sea but may get...

Our stay in Sardegna was the best part of our trip to Italy! We came to see Cala Goloritze because we saw it was on the top 20 TripAdvisor beaches in Europe. Hotel Brancamaria was awesome. So quiet and relaxing. The room was perfect, clean and the view from the balcony door was amazing. We left those curtains open the entire stay. Claudio welcomed us and made us feel so relaxed. Breakfast had a nice variety and was fresh. If you want coffee go to the bar in the lobby. The coffee machine at breakfast is not very good. Second story pool view was amazing probably the best hotel view in all of cala gonone because of the location on top of the hill. You will need a car or scooter because the beach is a bit of a hike. Don't be cheap spend some money on renting boats and scooters because everything is quite far and So Beautiful!!! Thank you Brancamaria!! Best 4 days of our 22 day vacation!!

Dearest Sirs,

we thank you so much for your note, and for sharing your experience with other travellers.

We are very happy we met your expectations with our services. The hotel is at the top of the hill, and to explore the areas around it you need a car or a scooter, but that's the best of Sardinia, all places are hidden and stunning.

We deeply hope to welcome you soon again.

Best Regards

We were completely overwhelmed by the generosity, kindness and friendship experienced during our stay at the Hotel Brancamaria two weeks ago. The management and staff at the hotel have enormously contributed to a great and unforgettable week in Cala Gonone. We still feel so touched and grateful to have met such wonderful people: Elisabetta, Mario, Raffaele, Maria.
This pictoresque hotel grows with you every single day. Raffaele is so knowlegable and made our trips a wonderful experience each day. Mario, Elisabetta and Maria made us feel very special.
We enjoyed our dinner and we were amazed by the creativity and the attention to details in presenting a superb and delicious meal every night.
The colour of the beaches nearby are stunning and we had a superb fishing trip with "Nonno Pio".
A truly unforgettable, delightful Holiday!
