“Excellent accommodation with friendly and helpful staff”
Reviewed October 3, 2012

Villa Gustui Maris fully justifies its 4-star rating. Rooms and public areas are spacious and light; food is excellent, with the breakfast offering quite superb. You can take both breakfast and dinner on a poolside terrace. The staff are uniformly helpful, producing maps and extra information when we announced our day's plans as we handed in our key. The pool is excellent - the "spa" rating below refers to the pool! The hotel's position offers magnificent views over the bay below. And that leads to the one warning that should be left here: if you want to vary the dining experience by going out to one of Cala Gonone's many other excellent restaurants by the harbour or along the waterfront, you will be faced with a very steep walk back to Gustui Maris - unless you can persuade one member of your party to hold back on the wine and remain legally fit to drive home. There is no local taxi service. Late at night when temperatures have cooled, it's not too bad, but will still take you at least 15 minutes' steep uphill walking! But VGM is a great place to stay, and although the prices are also 4 star, we'd very happily go again.

We stayed one night while on honeymoon. Very nice, clean, stylish hotel. The staff was excellent. Nice pool, beautiful ocean view. Quiet and relaxing. Well located for beaches, boating, mountains (short drive). Maybe not the best location for walking - the main town and marina are within walking distance but there is a bit of hill to deal with.

I have very mixed feelings about the hotel.

On the one hand, it is pleasant enough. The rooms are spacious even if quite basic; breakfast selection is solid; reception staff is very warm and friendly; and the view of the bay is quite nice. For all I know, this might still be the most upscale option around as so many reviews cannot be wrong and this seems to be the most expensive hotel in the area (and this is why we chose it).

On the other hand, for 160 euros per night in September for a room without a sea view, I expected something quite luxurious. As said above, the hotel was pleasant enough but quite basic and I would certainly not call it luxurious.

Given that the other hotel options were about half the price, the difference in quality did not justify the price difference. I would say the hotel is not for a value-conscious traveler.

Also, if you are travelling with children, the hotel is located on the opposite side of the town from the restraurants and the marina. It takes about 10 min to walk to the center and 20 min to walk back as you are walking quite uphill. So you might need to be travelling back and forth by car. And you might want to have a car to stay at this hotel

We arrived late in the evening and didn't have any idea how excellent the view would be when we woke up -- but every single member of the hotel staff was incredibly friendly and helpful, from the moment we arrived around midnight until the end of our stay. The staff was easily able to answer all of our questions and provided excellent information about what to do in the area -- namely, take a boat tour to see the fabulous beaches! (One piece of information that would be good to know in advance: it seems that a lot of the boat tours depart at 11 a.m. at the latest, so if you're planning on going on a boat tour, you might not want to sleep in quite so luxuriously as we did -- we barely made it in time!)

Our room (and random upgrade to a sea-view balcony!) was fantastic, and the patio with the view of the pool and the sea could not be beat for breakfast dining. It's a pleasant walk down to the port through neighborhood streets (though a little steep on the return trip!). We really loved the Cala Gonone area, and the Villa Gustui Maris in particular was a highlight of our trip. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Fantastic location in the Golf of Orosei. Incredible view from room and terrace. An oasis after spending time on the costa smeralda. We wished we had skipped silly Porto Cervo and came right here. Very serene scene catering to mostly couples who want a romantic getaway. Great clean pool area with bar service. At night, the sound of crickets and goats in the distant make for a perfect soundtrack. This is not the place where they blast you with italo disco all day and night. The staff and owners are so very friendly and make sure you find the hidden beaches and get you great tables in the local restaurants if needed. The dinners at the hotels were fantastic and absolutely the best meals we had in italy. I actually had the best pasta dish I ever had at Villa Gustui Maris. Some kind of Gnocchi type pasta with pecorino cheese and mint. Unbelievable...

Room Tip: Sea view is great.

Beautiful view

Hotel Villa Gustui Maris is located on a hillside which of course has its advantages and disadvantages. The advantages is that the hotel is located in a quiet part of the town and moreover also secures you a great view of the bay and the town

Disadvantage is you want to walk to the centre of the city you have to walk (climb) some very steep roads on your return. Nora Club hotel was one of the best hotels we stayed in during our recent visit to Sardinia.

We stayed in room 105 which I do not consider a 4 star room. Besides the closeness to the path from the street entrance which made the small terrace useless there were noise from the elevator and the corridor in general. We were told when booking that this room did not have a view and have therefore not considered this fact in our general review. Bathroom had no hangers for the towels which we found a bit odd.

Liked the fact that the hotel offered you umbrellas to bring along to the beach.

Cristina at the front desk is a treasure for this hotel. Very helpful both before arrival and during our stay. Thanks for that. If not for this service I would have rated the hotel a notch lower.

Not in any way a bad hotel to stay in but I just missed something (maybe some atmosphere, a nice garden, more interesting surroundings) for me to rate it higher.

Room Tip: Get a room on the first floor and with a view of the pool. Then you should be have a view of the bay...

My boyfriend and I have recently returned from a weeks holiday at the Hotel Villa Gustui Maris. Paola and her husband and their assistant Cristina provided an exceptional customer experience. It is a wonderful hotel.

We were unfortunate to find ourself in a tricky situation where our hire car was cancelled the day prior to arriving. Cristina and Paola did everything possible to ensure we made it across the island from Cagliari to Cala Gonone, and arranged for a car to pick us up from the closest major town, when the bus connections would get us no further at such a late hour, and kept the restaurant open late to ensure we were fed and watered before bed.

We were in room 307, which had an exceptional view of bay, and town of Cala Gonone below. The room was immaculate, and bathroom was luxurious.

Breakfast was very good, with a lovely selection of yoghurts, cereal, fresh fruit, cheeses, meats, breads, pastries and varying types of omellette dishes. If you wanted something in particular you could request this from the reception.

They provided an exceptional information service, and asked questions about where we were going, and advised of the best things to do in the area. They were warm and friendly, when we were leaving I felt like they were old friends.

Cala Gonone is a quiet town, with an outstanding bay. The highlight of our stay was hiring a motor boat for the day to travel down the coast line, visiting the beaches and coves that are accessible by boat only, or if you are an experienced mountain climber, with the jewel in the crown being Cala Goloritze - it truly is breathtaking.

Room Tip: Ask for a sea view.... it is worth the extra money.
