“A beautiful and homey bed and breakfast”
Reviewed July 7, 2008

My daughter and I found the room to be very cosy. The staff were wonderful and looked after us very well. We would recommend Harding House to any one stay in the Boston or Cambridge area .

Ignore the two bad reviews! first of all, this is a lovely Cambridge neighborhood, at least if you are walking towards Harvard Square, or up to Inman Square (I gather it is a little dicier if you walk towards Kendall Square on Cambridge St.), and both Central Square and Inman Square have great neighborhood restaurants and bars. The accommodations are charming -- I loved the decor and the appointments in the rooms (and the art in the common areas comes from a local, highly-regarded collective). The selection of breakfast foods was very nice, and I liked the fact that they served breakfast until 10 AM (I've been to several B&B's where they want you at breakfast promptly at 8:30 AM). Two caveats:

1. If you have any physical difficulties with stair climbing, you want to make sure your room is not on the top floor. It was OK for us, but the stairs are very steep!

2. It would be nice if the "special" breakfast entree actually was available through 10 AM (they ran out of the special item three of the five days we were there, when we came down for breakfast after 9:30).

Otherwise, the staff was friendly and helpful, the room was clean and comfortable, and the location was great!

  • Liked — Location and convenience
  • Disliked — A very high two flights of stairs to the third floor!

Dear Traveling Fiends,

Thank you so much for your glowing review of Harding House. We have been working hard under new management to impress savvy travelers like you, and the compliments mean the world to us. We are also very grateful for your suggestions and critiques. Please rest assured that guests are free to choose their preferred floor when making reservations. We make sure that no guest has to climb stairs if it's difficult for them. We also have staff on-hand to help with heavy bags.

Latecomers to breakfast are always welcome to request a fresh specialty entree if we've run out. We will gladly prepare something just for you - even after 10:00 when our breakfast has ended. Guests have been devouring our egg popovers, quiches and stuffed french toast, so we know we're doing something right. But, we have only recently begun offering a specialty entree on our breakfast buffet, and your feedback will help us perfect this new addition to our amenities.

As for our neighborhood, we appreciate your redeeming this lovely, historic section of mid-Cambridge. It is indeed a wonderful community. Harvard, Central and Inman Squares are safe and bustling with vibrant activity. And you're right, as in any major city, there are pockets of Cambridge further out toward a more industrial section of town, that are not part of our neighborhood, and we recommend avoiding them. We offer detailed directions to guests who plan to do a lot of walking and we always share this information with them. But there really is no need to encounter these areas because all the restaurants, shopping, nightlife and sights are right in our neighborhood - or in nearby areas that are also perfectly safe.

We hope to see you and feed you again on a future visit to Harding House!

This is a wonderful bed and breakfast. Harding House combines the best of both worlds: a staffed reception desk as in a small hotel with a B&B-style casual dining area for breakfast and afternoon snacks. Our room and bath were modern-comfortable while the dining and living rooms were retro-comfortable (1950s overstuffed couch and chairs, etc.) The Harding House is close to Boston's mass transit system, and is a 15 minute walk to Harvard Square and Central Square. An organic market and excellent coffee houses are nearby, and guests can use the Harding House's microwave to warm-up food. We were able to take advantage of Harding House's guest passes to Harvard's museums. There is a parking lot if you are traveling by car (we came by train), and a computer in the living room for checking email and printing boarding passes. We are looking forward to our next trip to Cambridge so that we can stay at the Harding House.

I love Harding House. I've stayed here 3 times so far for about a week at a time as my office is nearby, so it works for me practically.

Fair enough, it's not right in Harvard Sq, but it's a pleasant 15-20 minute walk up there, and if you want a handful of useful shops or the T, Central Sq is no more than 5 minutes away. Whether you think Central is sketchy is a matter of opinion, but I've never felt threatened or uncomfortable there, and there are some nice coffee shops and bars around and about.

The property itself is great - both the house and the staff. The reception is always warm without being intrusive, and they look after you - anything you ask for is never too much trouble. The rooms are large enough and decorated very tastefully in a style befitting the house.

I think it's Thursday night when they open a couple of bottles of wine and put some food out in the evening, which is a nice touch, and there's always jars of pretzels, cereal bars and bowls of fresh fruit available to help yourself to anytime (well, no-one ever told me off for doing that, anyway!)

I wouldn't stay anywhere else in Cambridge.

This is a great B&B: excellent location, friendly and knowledgeable staff, clean & comfortable rooms and all at a price well below what one could pay for a hotel in the Cambridge/Boston area.

The location is close to Central station on the Boston subway, about 5 minutes walk (10 with bags), and also very close to some great bars and live music venues such as the Middle East. Harvard and MIT are about 10-15 minutes walk away.

The staff were delightful; friendly and very knowledgeable about the local area. Breakfasts were delicious and diverse with coffee and cake available at all times.

The rooms are homely and clean with cable televisions and free wifi. There's also a computer available in the lounge.

This is an excellent choice if you're staying in Cambridge or Boston, with downtown Boston just 15 minutes away on the subway.

I was a bit late getting a room for MIT parent's weekend and wound up booking one here, since all the other hotels in the vicinity were either booked or wanted 400+ dollars a night. I was pleasantly surprised. The location wasn't bad, about a 20-25 minute walk to the MIT student center, and a five-minute walk to the Central Square T station; from looking at a map I got the impression that Harvard Square was about a 25 minute walk as well, but I can't speak to that from personal knowledge. A reasonably good continental breakfast (juice, tea and coffee, cereal, muffins, bagels, toast, coffee cake, cheese) was served every morning, and some sort of cake was available in the kitchen throughout the day; a bowl of Hershey Kisses on the check-in counter was always well-stocked as well. The lobby had several different newspapers (Boston Globe, NY Times) available as well. The staff seemed friendly but unobtrusive, and the building was pretty. At 200 dollars a night for a room with two beds, the hotel was a bit pricey, but one expects that in the Boston area, particularly during parent's weekend. All told, I enjoyed my stay there and would certainly recommend this guesthouse to somebody who doesn't want the glitz of places like the Marriott or the Hotel at MIT.

the inn is not really convenient to anything except one sketchy area of Cambridge - I don't advise walking around alone at night. The rooms are just plain and not kept very clean. We found several large ants in our room just when we checked in and the room was quite dusty. The staff were at best disinterested and certainly not helpful. The parking situation was ridiculous, not even enough spaces for half the rooms. It really was not worth the money.

We are very sorry to hear that Harding House did not meet your expectations. We have changed management since you were here and the concerns you expressed have long since been remedied. We truly value each and every guest and work hard to make them feel at home. It is our goal to resolve any concerns you have while you are still here so that you can see first-hand our commitment to serving our guests. We hope that were you to return, you would find us to be a warm, clean, and comfortable place to visit. We are very much attuned to guest feedback and are glad to see that others who have stayed here more recently have been very pleased.

As for our neighborhood, we are no different from any other city environment, except that we have world class institutions of learning set against a backdrop of historic Victorian era homes, quaint tree-lined streets with beautiful gardens, and creative and energetic neighbors who truly care about our community. We are located near Central Square, a vibrant and diverse center of town with wonderful shops, restaurants, and nightlife and just fifteen minutes from downtown Boston by train. We are also within walking distance of Harvard Square and Harvard University, MIT, and Inman Square, all areas that regularly attract tourists from all over the world who find this to be a safe, wonderful and well cared for place to visit.

Many visitors to Cambridge and to the East Coast in general are surprised to find that rates can be higher than other areas of the country, but also tell us that we are very much in the affordable range when compared to many of our neighboring hotels. To ensure that guests receive the most for their money, we offer many perks and amenities such as free wifi, free parking, free local calls, free snacks all day, and free wine and cheese at any time upon request. We also provide discounts for early-week and midweek stays, birthdays, long-term stays and frequent visitors. Our rooms with shared bath are another economical option, yet they don't compromise on quality or comfort.

If you are ever in Cambridge again, please give us another try...
