They had dim sum but we went for the standard menu. We picked a couple of things but the waitress said others were better. She was right - the Sesame Chicken was very good and the noodles were improved by the hot sauce she brought. The hot and sour soup was tasty and the price was right - $20 for a nice lunch for two.The waitress congratulated us for finishing our plates. Just like mom might have done! Worth a visit if your hanging out in Cambridge. They don't take credit cards so bring cash...

Dim sum review (Sunday morning, arrived just prior to opening and seated instantly). I'm comparing Mary Chung's to dim sum in Chinatown as a reference point.

It was just 2 of us, and not too terribly hungry. We ordered:
Scallion pie (which is the same as scallion pancake) - REALLY good - crispy, layered, not greasy, just about perfect
Sui mai (pork and shrimp dumplings) - alright, very very meaty
Steamed Peking ravioli - quite bland and the ravioli wrappers were much thicker than necessary and very starchy
Stir fried string beans - good, but congealed quickly on the plate making them much less appetizing
All were served with the same dipping sauce which was the typical dipping sauce, but spicier than we were used to. Thankfully, the table had rice vinegar and soy sauce to cut the spice a bit and make the whole meal a little more palatable.

Service was decent - waitress seemed a bit annoyed by us, which was odd since there were very few people in the restaurant and we didn't place any crazy order or odd demands.

Beware - this is a cash only restaurant, although they did accept a local check (don't press your luck, they may crack down if too many people ask).

Overall, decent if you are dying for dim sum and cannot get out of Cambridge. But Chinatown is infinitely better and has much more variety.

Went to Cambridge for one night, on business. I must admit that Mary Chung was not my first choice. First one was just much too fancy (I didn't feel like putting on a fancy pair of trousers for dinner), and the second didn't answer the phone (probably too busy); and so Mary Chung it was. Had a decent meal. Got the Suan La Chow Show, which was excellent and super spicy - this definitely was the highlight; Dun Dun noodles with chicken, also excellent; Green Beans with Chicken, good; and General Gau's Chicken which was a tad bit too bread-y. OveralI, food was good. The beer was flat however. Service was fine and attentive. Atmosphere was totally no-frills. I'd go back.

We stopped on our way home from seeing the Blue Man Group. We walked in about 20 minutes before they closed. They were empty, but didn't turn us away. We were only after a small, late-nite meal; but tried the wonton soup, hot and sour soup, one of the entry specials and some friend rice. Everything was excellent. It is cooked fresh (even right before close) and you could taste the quality of the ingredients. We are heading back for another meal before the end of our visit.

We travel the Boston area looking for the next great Chinese restaurant, almost every Sunday evening. This week's surprise delight can be found in Central Square. Finding a parking space was a bit frustrating, but well worth the adventure in order to eat at Mary Chung's. The chicken and peanuts was fresh, full of white meat chunks and the spices were eye opening. Not over-powering, yet not wimpy. I had the shrimp wonton soup, which was delicious. The wonton dough was thin and fresh, the shrimp dumplings were homemade. Mary Chung's food is just as good as any high end, over priced, Chinese restaurant in the Boston area. And the service, what more could you ask for...friendly smiles, lots of attention, and my water glass was never empty. I'm going back!
