“What happened?”
Reviewed August 15, 2013

I have been to Upstairs on the Square a half-dozen times but have not visited in at least 2 years. Visited for lunch recently and was very disappointed. The food was always memorable but this time it was memorable for all the wrong reasons. Ordered an $18.00 lobster roll which was served on stale brioche. There were approx. 2 tablespoons of lobster meat with no dressing to speak of - not that I wanted mounds of mayo but there wasn't anything, even lemon juice as far as I could tell. With lobster prices at an all time low in New England this summer, the portion size vs. price was criminal. Service was slow as well, restaurant was less than 1/2 full with a few people outside and it took 45 minutes to get 2 lunches to the table. Not sure if it was the kitchen or the server but even so. Did enjoy the chocolate turtles for dessert & loved the updated decor.

“Way out there...”
Reviewed August 7, 2013

Not a huge selection of food and the food took a while to arrive, but it was certainly worth the wait. The pasta sauce was absolutely superb and completely original. Also a superb selection of wines and beers including a Trappist ale. The decor is eclectic to say the least - pink walls and a zebra motif and the lighting is subdued giving the impression of a LSD trip. Maybe not a place to take your granny or your parents but definitely a great meal and an unusual night out.

“A Quaint Outdoor People Watching Experience.”
Reviewed August 3, 2013 via mobile

To start we did not make reservations and there was little waiting. We ordered the butter lettuce salad which was phenomenal, and their burger absolutely delicious! Location was nice as we sat outside and watched the wildlife pass, it was a great late night meal after walking the Harvard grounds.

“Whimsy and Wine”
Reviewed July 28, 2013

I had a great evening here; a perfect ending to one of the most beautiful days this summer. The restaurant is very cute and quirky. Fun for a girls night out! We had drinks in the bar and then headed for our table upstairs. We decided to do the 7-course tasting with wine pairings (which is why I am now suffering from a food hangover) and I would scale back to 5 next time. The tastings are really rather large portions, so this was a LOT of food. They are chef selected options, but that was fine with me. We had beef carpaccio, lobster stew, gnocchi, sea bass, duck, cheeses and a dessert I don't even remember since I was dazed by then! Everything was delicious and the wines were very tasty accompaniments.

The service was very good and the wait staff accommodated our request to slow down bringing courses so that we could breathe between bites. I don't know if it was one of the BEST meals ever, but it was very good and lots of fun.

“Selling the Sizzle (only)”
Reviewed July 26, 2013

They are trying with the fluff, selling the sizzle, certainly not about the steak! Nice presentation, waitstaff had all the right moves, presentation and food description, and a nice little welcome apertif, but when it came to the food, rather poor overall. Not someplace I'd bookmark for another visit. The atmosphere in the upstairs dining room (apparently their high end dining) rather strange as well, some garish pink decor. Quite dead for a busy summer weekend around Harvard Sq., obvious why after eating.
