“A fact of life if you live around it, but no one has done much to make it nice”
Review of Porter Square

Ranked #25 of 64 things to do in Cambridge
Attraction details
Reviewed December 29, 2017

Few of the so-called squares in Cambridge are very charming; even Porter Square's more famous cousin, Harvard Square, has been taken over by cheap chain stores and a giant, depressing CVS. But Porter Square, with its all-dominating parking lot that is also usually overfull and hard to enter and exit from, and with its terrible traffic regulations making it dangerous to cross any of the streets, has little going for it design-wise. Note also that, in its wisdom, Cambridge traffic authorities have made U-turns on Mass Ave impossible, so if you make a mistake (which you will) trying to park or find somewhere, you may end up in Arlington before you can return to the chaos of Porter Square.

Nice small shopping area in a convenient site. With a Supermarket, DIY store, an excellent organic
health foods store and other shops / cafes.
Smallish car park but we have never had a problem parking.
The area is very popular with the local University students.

While shopping along Mass Ave on a rainy day this square and T stop provided quick protection from the elements. Plenty of shopping, food and drink in the area.

Porter Square is far enough from Boston to chill a little but close enough to experience the city at anytime of day. From the variety of restaurants to a 24 hour supermarket, the area has everything you'll need while visiting.

I live near Porter Square and pass through this area nearly every day. It's a nice area and I feel safe, there is occasionally someone begging but in general there is no riff-raff.
Another thing which I think is novel, there is no McDonalds/KFC/Pizza Hut etc chain junk food eateries (the exception being Dunkin Donuts which originated in Boston). There are chains such as Panera & Potbelly, but then there are local independant food outlets, which offer a unique experience. Try the icecream from Emac & Bolio's (next to CVS) on a hot day, or visit the great Bookstore near Starmarket. Tags Hardware is a great local shop for many household needs, and Michaels craft store is tucked away underground, a real Alladins cave. Porter doesn't have the hectic student presence of Harvard, it's more reserved with a well-to-do feel about it, and I'm so glad I live nearby.
