“Great service and location”
Reviewed November 4, 2013

Great service from reception team. Very helpful in suggesting places to visit and how to get there. Rooms are spacious and accommodating. Bar in hotel is a wine bar more than a pub atmosphere. Shopping mall is attached to the property and great eating places a 15 minute stroll away. Easy to walk across to city of Boston in 20 minutes. 15 minutes from the airport.

Room Tip: Ask for a room with a view outside and not the internal courtyard/ entrance

Really large spacious comfortable room, no solo discount but most hotels don't. Pay per view movies / minibar / room service are v expensive; perhaps that's usual. Room service menu could be more extensive. Has free wifi once sign up to loyalty programme (which is free and doesn't take long). I had booked online and pre-paid for room only; the front desk wouldn't even give me a quote for adding breakfast which was very strange - they said I simply couldn't have breakfast there as it wasn't in my pre-booking. It's a 5-10min walk from nearest subway (Lechmere); area is safe enough although not prime Boston/Cambridge. There's a starbucks and convenience stores in Cambridge Galleria around the corner but no nice nearby restaurants - you need to go into downtown Boston really. If returning to Boston and could afford it, would realistically stay in downtown near the Common somewhere. But if this is the most affordable on your list, it's perfectly comfortable.

Thanks for sharing your experience, especially about the restaurants. Bambara (our restaurant) is the best in the area, but we are a short cab or train ride from most restaurants in Boston & Cambridge and our concierge would love to help with reservations!

Our stay at the hotel was great--all of the Kimpton benefits as I mentioned in another review. The hotel is beautiful and in a great location next to a mall. The hotel is relatively close to the airport even though it is not in the industrial area, and across the street from the Science Museum. The only suggestion I would give to this hotel is in their in-hotel restaurant. We tried to get a drink there on one night and ate there another...both times we sat at the bar thinking we could get quicker service. The bartender was busting his tail, but obviously it was hard for him to keep up with serving people at the bar (many of whom were probably business travelers trying to get a quick drink or meal) and providing drinks for the restaurant. Many at the bar had to wait awhile to get served or get a refill...I saw a couple of people walk away, and we definitely know we would've ordered another drink if the service was better. Perhaps even a part time bus boy during the busy evening hours, especially Friday and Saturday evening (the 2 nights we were there) would be a good idea.

Room Tip: Join the Kimpton program and you can get upgraded to a higher floor for a low fee if they have those...

We typically stay at the Marlowe on our trips to Boston. It has convenient/cheaper parking in the mall attached to the hotel with easy access to the T if needed. Great customer service and attractive, spacious rooms. We especially love the pet friendly and daily happy hour.

I cannot ever say enough about Kimpton, it's my go to hotel in any city!We stayed here for one night and the staff, the rooms, the bar, the food, all excellent!I know without a doubt that I will not be disappointed at Kimpton. Hotel Marlowe was luxurious, the bedding on the bed was so comfortable, we overslept in the morning!

Overall, this is a very good hotel in East Cambridge (about a mile from MIT, but a good 2.5 to 3 miles from Harvard). You will not get a "Harvard Square" experience here, but it is very close to Boston proper-- Boston is literally over the bridge (a 3 minute walk) -- and the neighborhood is quirky, historic and interesting (once you get away from the main strip). As a born and bred Bostonian (who has lived in NYC/NJ for more than 30 years), I know the neighborhood, and I'm extremely impressed at how far it's come since I was a kid. Plus, they have done wonders in preserving the historic aspects of East Cambridge (the different kinds of housing alone is worth a walk. And don't miss the Middlesex Courthouse -- a gorgeous building).

Unless you are visiting Harvard itself, there is no real reason to stay in Harvard Square as the two major hotels there, The Charles and The Veritas, are disappointing -- and overpriced -- for various reasons (please see my reviews on the properties) - Hotel Marlowe is actually nicer than either hotel mentioned, and a much better value, too.

Pros:

** It's a Kimpton. With a couple of exceptions (particularly Ink48 in NYC, which I would not recommend) the Kimpton brand means quality and service. The Hotel Marlowe lives up to both.

** Reasonably priced for Cambridge/Boston. With my triple AAA rate, and a king sized room with a view of the Charles (and on a high floor) my room was $285 a night (more than $200 less than the Charles Hotel during my final stay there). Taxes are not included in this rate.

** Room is big (ask for a river view. It's worth the extra money) and has everything you'd need in it and more. If you become a Kimpton "In Touch" member (no charge. Takes seconds to sign up), you will also get free internet access, and $10 credit for the mini-bar or the restaurant. The room was in good shape and everything worked. The decor is quirky Kimpton, but pleasant, comfortable and nice.

** My request for a feather-free bedding was in place in my room. This is often an issue for me, and I appreciated that it was done right the first time (I had requested it online).

** The staff -- from the front desk to the doormen -- were friendly and efficient. They were, at all times, very professional, but they also had more than a hint of warmness which is always welcome. You actually felt like they were happy that you were there!

** The hotel has valet parking, but you can also park your own car (in a big, brightly lit, staffed, safe garage right underneath the hotel) for just $20 for 24 hours. This is half the rate at The Charles Hotel, and most other hotels area.

** Boston's subway system, called "The T," is a 5 minute walk from the hotel. Even though I had my car, I actually took the "T" to my client's office on the first day (as I was coming back to the hotel that night). The hotel is also just a couple of minutes drive from all the main thoroughfares in Boston (you can literally get anywhere from this location).

** If you like to shop, there's an indoor mall, with lots of national brand stores, right next door. I actually went in to get breakfast (there's a food court) very early instead of room service one morning. It was quick and easy!

** The hotel is almost across the street from the wonderful, Museum of Science.

Cons:

** Check-in took a few minutes longer than usual (after 3pm) since "my" room had had a late checkout. Still, I was in the room by 3:20pm.

** Housekeeping the first day wasn't as good as it was on the second day. There was dust on some surfaces, and on the tv. It wasn't a huge deal, but I was happy to see the room was spotless for the second night.

** The towels should be a lot plusher -- they were the only real disappointment in this hotel (almost sandpaper like, and not as big as they should be). There were, however, plenty of towels.

** I had an extra charge on my credit card (I always check my charges on line a couple of days after checkout) for $10.17 from the hotel. I called immediately and was told that it was for cashews. Well, I don't eat cashews (and can't), and so the charge was removed and credited to my card. As we know, it's always important to check those charges 2-3 days after checking out (to be sure that there aren't any extra, unauthorized charges).

Bottom Line:

I do plan on staying at Hotel Marlowe during my next business trip to Boston. The fine attributes of this hotel (rooms, staff, location etc.), combined with the ease of transportation both on the "T" and via car, make it a very good choice for business travelers and tourists.

Please excuse typos!

I found the hotel on priceline and could not have been happier with our choice. We went to Boston for a romantic get away weekend. The staff were fantastic as were the accommodations. The bed was extremely comfortable, and I am usually picky. The free wine in the afternoon and coffee in the morning were both great. The location is great as you are very close to downtown and public transportation.

Room Tip: Ask for a room overseeing The Charles
