“Perfect Place for a Family”
Reviewed February 19, 2008

Stayed in Cambridge with my three young daughters over school vacation. Hotel Marlowe is just a quick walk away from the Museum of Science ( a big selling point!). The staff was incredibly friendly, even to my young children (and from what I've heard, PETS who are welcome at the hotel as well). The rooms are "super cool" with animal print carpets, funky (and comfortable) beds, and spacious for Cambridge/Boston standards. The hotel is next door to Cambridgeside Galleria, a three story mall with restaurants, food court, and many wonderful stores. My girls can't wait to come back again, and neither can I!

I stayed at the Marlowe on a business trip and I found the staff to be extremely friendly and helpful. I LOVED the leopard print design around the hotel and the bath robes hung in the cupboards with the labels reading "release your wild side" were a great touch!
I just felt really comfortable and at home during my stay. The lobby area is really cosy with a fire and big couches and guests are invited to chill out there and enjoy the complimentary coffee and wine.
Would love to stay again!

I heard about the Hotel Marlowe from a friend, so when the time came to look for a place for our wedding ceremony and reception, I thought of Hotel Marlowe right away. Our wedding was absolutely perfect, and as part of their package - they offered a bridal suite for an overnight stay.

The room was absolutely exquisite! The plush colors, super-comfortable bed, very spacious living room, flat screen TV, huge bathroom with a jacuzzi for two, leopard print bath robes and slippers - PERFECT! The staff was extremely courteous and friendly, too.

We ordered breakfast (smoked salmon bagels), which I thought was pretty expensive. However, when they brought it I was amazed at how much salmon we got! I think I couldn't even finish it - but definitely worth the money!

I'm looking forward to our anniversary :) I'll be sure to book the suite there again!

In spite of the fact that I was fired when I worked for Kimpton Hotels (not actually, but pretty much), I will always love the roots of Kimpton Hotels. And thus far, it does not seem that the company has ruined that good name.

The original concept was to offer a funky environment that was priced less than the other guys - and the hotel would make up for lower prices with more business. Now that they have become a bit trendy, perhaps they have forsaken the lower prices - but they still offer great value. So, rather than a hotel for "the people", it might be a bit elitist. The danger is that they might evolve into the "cookie cutter" business they once rejected. But you still have that wonderful "Kimpton" feel. So, maybe not as good as it once was, but still - very, very good.

The "design" is what sells me. They are not afraid to work with bold colors and rich funky textures. It just feels good.

But here is my take on the small things:

The lighting was designed for 3-way – which would offer a rich warmth all the way to bright reading lights. The "bright" did not work on the lamps. None of the lighting was great for reading.

The "business" use of the room was great. WiFi, adequate and accessible plugs by the desk... the business center was spectacular. Free use of the computers with internet AND even a printer. Again, it was a bit dark for an office setting, but it was wonderful.

I think the designer should take another look at the room... a few tiny mistakes. A WONDERFUL floor lamp was tucked in behind a wonderful red velvet chair. I think the lamp was designed to be on the side of the chair. The lighting would have been better, and it would have showed off the spectacular, heavy, rich floor lamp. Kimpton lamps are usually very fun & funky.

Also the desk lamp covered up the wall art. Just a weird thing I think the designer would have found annoying.

WAY too much documentation in the room... it was loaded with little "green" notes and reminders... the "green" thing is great - but it looked a bit contrived, like they were trying to hide the fact that the hotel saves a good chunk of change when guests reuse towels. WHY HIDE IT? The Kimpton I remember had a little fun telling it like it was. And who cares if the hotel saves money if it decides to support the environment. In that way, it seemed like the hotel was a copy-cat of other properties that likewise try to hide the real intent behind their "green" initiative (meaning trying to SAVE some greenbacks!). It just felt like a "sales job". It was the same with the "every hotel tells a story" tagline. Rather than the interesting hotel telling the story, it seemed like they were trying to ram it down your throat... they had stuff in the elevators, the bathrooms, on the walls as you come into the room... everywhere trying to sell the "story". It would have been a little more comfortable had they let the room sell itself (WHICH IT CERTAINLY DOES!! The rooms are great!!!).

Here is one more hint... hotels need bigger closets designed for "traveler". If a piece of luggage does not fit on the luggage rack INSIDE the closet, it is too small. It would be nice if heavy hooks were designed in more accessible places for hanging bags... this way the room is pretty AFTER the guest arrives. As is, one is forced to unload all over the room. Too bad... maybe they will work on that in future hotels.

But overall the Hotel Marlowe IS another wonderful creation by Kimpton! It was fun, exceptionally clean and beautiful. I'm sorry the company ditched me! But they seem to be doing just great without me... so, that says something, right?

I would recommend this hotel to anyone... and I always - ALWAYS - recommend all Kimpton Hotels. They are the best places to stay.

This hotel continues to be the BEST in the Boston area! Friendly and knowledgable staff who really go out of their way to make you feel special. This was the first time we've brought our child to this hotel and she was blown away by how 'cool' it was. She's 8 and found it fun and funky. She thought it was like Alice in Wonderland and loved the view of the Zakem Bridge and Museum of Science from our window.

Close to North Station/Boston Garden (a ten minute walk), Science Park T-Stop (closer than the Cambridge stops, 10 min. walk). Museum of Science is approx 5 mins walk. Very safe area. No matter time of day or night we walked there were plenty of people on the street. It helps the IMAX Theatre at MOS is open late.

This is a great hotel for all, singles, couples and families and it's even pet friendly to boot! Very quiet, very comfy!

Join their rewards program for extra perks like cookies and bottle water upon arrival and a wonderful welcome letter. Room service/restaurant a bit pricey. We wish they had a lighter fare/price style menu with things children would like. We ended up eating all our meals at the Cambridgeside Galleria, attached to the hotel by a parking garage, very easy walk out of the weather.

We'll be back again and again!

The Hotel Marlowe is one of the hotels in the small boutique chain run by the Kimpton Group. Like other Kimpton hotels I've stayed at, it is a fantastic place. Fun/cool lobby area, great restaurant and bar where I've met many interesting folks, and clean well-kept rooms. It's on the green line, which gets you into downtown Boston, and a short cab ride from top Cambridge destinations like Harvard or Central square.

Two things make this hotel stand apart from any other. First, the staff is second-to-none. From Bill, the hotel manager, down to every valet and member of housekeeping, the staff is friendly, courteous, and has a genuine desire to make your stay pleasant.

What I really love about the Marlowe is that it is swanky without being pretentious. Granted the red velvet couches in the lobby and the leopard print carpet in the rooms might not be to everyone's taste, but it's a hotel, not your home. So if you can let yourself relax a bit, the atmosphere can be a welcome diversion from every day life. But the staff never makes you feel like they're sucking up--they simply try to do ther job exceptionally well. For me, this is in stark contrast to other area hotels, many of which are pretentious without any of the posh or swank to justify it.
