“A really comfortable and elegant hotel”
Reviewed July 28, 2011

I recently stayed here for 3 nights for a business trip. This hotel was extremely comfortable and great for a business traveler. The rooms were spacious with room to work and free internet. The staff was very helpful and I was really impressed with the little touches like an umbrella in every room. The location is also perfect. I only wish you could get ice without having to call room service, but this is a minor thing. I will be back!

It's been two years since we last stayed at the Charles. Obviously the location has not changed - just a few minutes walk from Harvard Square in the middle of Cambridge which is very convenient for the colleges , the T station and shopping.
We opted for s standard room which is not huge but perfectly adequate for a week. Decorations always seem fresh, and the bathroom is fine especially the 'in mirror' TV. Reception staff and the concierge were helpful and approachable. The room cleaning staff were, as usual ,very effective and inobtrusive, we hardly noticed them - exactly what you want. We slept very well which is a testament to the quiet room and comfortable bed.
The only real negative is the lack of any in-room coffee/tea. We considered buying a kettle to use but only found one several days before the end of our visit so it was not worth it . Sure this hotel is not cheap but its still the best in central Cambridge. I am sure we will be back next year , but with a kettle next time !

We stayed at the Charles for a wedding. Rooms are spacious and the higher floors have some excellent views of Cambridge and Boston. The hotel is distinguished by its interesting art work and quilt collection. It didn't quite feel like a high end hotel in spite of the substantial room price. The bathroom was spacious and had the unusual addition of a television in the mirror. The wireless Internet signal in our room was pretty weak, but in the lobby and other areas we had a good signal and fast service. There's also a free business center with one computer. A significant downer was that air conditioning wasn't very good. In spite of running at full speed, our room became quite uncomfortable in the afternoon. A number of other guests in our party had the same complaint about their rooms. This shouldn't be a problem in seasons other than summer.

Room Tip: Room 1026 has a great view.

I stayed here with a friend for a "girls' weekend". I had never stayed in Harvard Square before, so this was a treat for me. Walking in to the hotel, I was not impressed: dark, hip 1950s/60s decor. Not my style. Our double-bed room was on the 8th floor and had an impressive view of the Back Bay skyline...and the homeless people sleeping on the benches in the park below.

The room, as another reviewer stated, was of Marriott-quality. Don't get me wrong, I love the Marriott hotel chain and stay at their establishments frequently, but for the price we paid I expected more bells and whistles. No coffee maker, the refridgerator was packed with food and booze we could purchase for astronomical prices, we had to call down to room service to have ice delivered, and parking overnight in the garage below the hotel is $34.

On a positive note: the room was very spacious, room service has a 11pm-6:30am menu with surprisingly great choices, and the beds were so comfy that I had quite possibly the best night's sleep I've ever had at a hotel. The bathroom has a really cool TV in the mirror feature too. The hotel's location is perfect: right in Harvard Square, near a lot of great restaurants, stores and shops. On Sundays there is a farmer's market right outside the hotel.

I was amazed and disheartened by how many homeless people were hanging around the Square. Would I stay in this hotel and/or Harvard Square again? I'm not sure.

Top notch location for business travelers in the Cambridge area. Great rooms clean quiet and well appointed. Nice meeting facilites. Hotel restaurants were reasonable in price and good in quality and service. The fitness facility is well provisioned with plenty of machines. Good WiFi coverage. No reservations about making a reservation at The Charles Hotel. I will comment the bed was on the soft side for my taste.

I accompanied my wife on a business trip to Boston and her company put us up at The Charles. The staff was friendly and efficient. The hotel was upscale and in a great area, adjacent to the Harvard campus and next to the Charles River. We were within walking distance of several restaurants and convenience stores. The restaurants ran from IHOP to upscale eateries and local favorites like Charlie’s Kitchen. The room and bedding were comfortable with a nice view of the square. Unfortunately it did have a tendency to be a little noisy at night. One of the nicer perks was a television screen mounted behind the bathroom mirror which allowed for viewing the news in the morning as you got ready to go out. I would recommend this hotel if you are in the area. I will stay here again, as long as it is on someone else’s dime.

Room Tip: Try to get a view of the river.
