This is my favorite used book store in the area (and there are many). Always a fabulous selection of literary fiction and scholarly nonfiction, books in good condition, prices low. I love browsing here even if not looking for anything in particular. There are always good finds.

Wandering around Harvard sq I happened upon Raven. What a find. The selection is wide and rich with some treasures at great prices. I never go without finding something I can't leave without.

Like the first reviewer, I also did an impromptu used bookstore tour while in Boston for six days. I shopped at Cambridge, Salem, and Boston area bookstores. Raven in Cambridge came in the lowest relative to the other stores I visited with regards to the space and literary fiction selection. I was hoping to see more authors represented than I did; this is likely due to the small space and the fact that they specialize in other subject areas. Having stated that, the store is well-organized, books are easy to access, and the location is very convenient from the Harvard "T" stop.

Boston is a wonderful city on many levels. Feels like a collection of neighborhoods in a friendly, walkable city. Lots of parks, great architecture, and friendly people. But as a life long book collector, Boston is amongst the best cities around that has quality shops. Most cities have seen the decline of the bookstore, but Boston/ Cambridge has been adding more recently.
In Cambridge (home to Harvard and MIT), there is Harvard Bookshop that has both excellent new and used books. Next there is Raven Used Books in harvard square which, despite being smallish, has one of the best selections of scholarly and literary used books. In Boston, the Brattle bookshop (which is one of the oldest in the U.S.) provides a somewhat chaotic, but fun search for out of the ordinary used books and good prices. The commonwealth shop is also quite good. Excitingly, on my last visit to Boston a week ago, I noticed that Raven Used Books of Cambridge is opening another book shop in Boston (on the famous Newbury Street) which I am sure will be as exciting as their other one.
If one ventures out my car to western mass, there are tons of great, classical used bookstores (which I will save for another review).
