A Friendly Inn at Harvard Square
Ranked #19 of 20 Cambridge B&B and Inns
Reviewed March 31, 2013

I was looking for a convenient place to stay for one night with affordable rate in Cambridge and for visiting Boston. Friendly Inn is the one I choose eventually and true enough the location is great and is walking distance to Harvard square and the subway. There is a supermarket and starbucks nearby while walking to Harvard Square. It has free parking which is good for me as I drove from Connecticut. The room is clean and has wi fi connection with a personal bathroom. Wake up and was hoping for a nice breakfast but find the breakfast could be better, mainly pastries, bread, coffee, milk tea, fruits. If they could serve some hot breakfast, I would give a very good rating for serving my stay.

My wife and I stayed here for two days in Cambridge--couldn't have asked for more. We had our little one-month old baby and they were incredibly helpful with offering us extra towels with which to clean him. The location is also superb--walking distance from Harvard Square and right on Cambridge St near Quincy (actually right at Cambridge St and Irving). The rooms are quite nice and homely, and the breakfast is good given the price--continental but adequate for what they were charging. The rates are outstanding for Boston area. To boot--there is free parking for guests.

I highly recommend this place.

This is a B&B style place blocks from Harvard Square and the university. I was working at the Peabody Museum, so it was very close. As far as Boston goes, the price was great. The room was sparse and the radiator worked a little too well, but generally it's a nice place to stay. There is a fancier B&B next door if you are expense-reporting your trip though haha. My only complaint was that the windows only had shear curtains and there were big gaps around the door, so there was a lot of light in the room all night, but nothing a eye-mask couldn't fix.

Room Tip: A room away from the front of the building would be preferable (it's a busy road)

We were stunned by the room rates for Cambridge hotels and B&Bs--and so were delighted to find the comparatively much more affordable Friendly Inn. Clean, quiet (inside), comfortable, and just a one-minute walk into Harvard Yard: This inn is a great value. You won't find any boutique hotel or B&B touches, but checking in is easy, breakfast (not only coffee, tea, and danish but juice, cereals, fresh fruit, hard-boiled eggs etc.) is generous, and each room has its own bathroom. If you're staying at the inn on a weekend and are a light sleeper, consider ear plugs--not because the hotel itself is noisy but because the inn is practically on the Harvard campus and young people are out and about at all hours. The street noise is our only reason for giving this four rather than five stars. All in all, an excellent budget choice for the area.

Room Tip: Ask for an upper floor (if you don't object to stairs) away from the street.

i was very disappointed. Just a terraced house with the most basic but clean accomodation. no room for anything but bed in bedroom. nasty wall light came on if you wanted bedside light. hard wood chair. nice bedding. nice towels but once you put toothbrush beside tiny sink no room for anything else. tiny clean dated bathroom. husband found shower good altho nasty plastic curtain.no kettle. no room to turn round in bathroom or bedroom. couldnt cancel because booked thru booking.com and no laptop with me. nice coffee in urn downstairs. cost nearly $450 for 2 nights of the most basic accomodation since i went youth hostelling 40 years ago.

Room Tip: i wanted a bath and they said they dont have any. dont go if you enjoy a bath. utterly basic but cle...

An excellent no-frills B & B with an attentive, courteous staff. I was delayed by my train connections and didn't arrive to check in until after one a.m. but was greeted warmly and uncomplainingly by a staff member who had waited patiently for my arrival. The place is quiet, clean, and very centrally located for people having business at Harvard or in Harvard Square. The excellent food and spirits facilioties of the Broadway Marker are only a hop away.

I have now stayed here twice on visits to Harvard University. Like others this is largely because there are few brand name hotels and these are at about twice what you'd pay for the same in other cities. So, enter what would be a bed & breakfast in the UK. The rooms are clean but like a bedroom at your aged aunt's house. Of the breakfast, don't bother unless you like danish pasties but the coffee is passable. But you are near to the University, there's a Starbucks a block away and there are great places to eat in this expensive town.
