Owner description: Mount Auburn Cemetery was founded in 1831 as America's first landscaped cemetery. A National Historic Landmark, its renowned landscape inspired the creation of the nation's public parks. Mount Auburn was designated an Important Bird Area by the Massachusetts Audubon Society, reinforcing its status as a significant wildlife sanctuary. Still an active burial place, Mount Auburn Cemetery provides comfort and solace to countless families. The Friends of Mount Auburn Cemetery was established in 1986 to assist in the conservation of the Cemetery's natural beauty and to promote the appreciation of its cultural, historic, and natural resources. Over 100 public programs are offered annually by the Friends to educate, enrich, and inspire the community. The Friends seeks financial support for education and interpretive programs and materials for the public, specific cultural projects, and operational support for horticultural rejuvenation and the preservation of the historic monuments, structures, and archival artifacts and records.

“Designed for the living”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 8, 2013

Mt. Auburn Cemetery was one of the first in the nation to be designed for the living. This is why I find myself here on a beautiful day. The view from the observatory is cool. Walking amongst the plantings and gravestones is peaceful. A great place for birders, I spyed a screech owl just hanging out in tree. So if you are looking for a place to "get away from it all" make this your destination.

“A "don't miss" for plant people”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 26, 2013

This is one of America's premier botanical gardens/arboreta. There are an amazing number of champion trees, and lovely plantings. If the tower at the top is open it is well worth a climb. If not, even at the base of the tower there is a gorgeous view of Boston on a clear day. Visit in April and you'll be inspired for the entire gardening season. Ask for the tree map in the first building when you enter the gate.

“A beautiful park as well as a cemetery”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 15, 2013

Mt. Auburn Cemetery is a marvelous place to meet friends and walk - there are thousands of trees (flowering madly in the spring), ponds, statues and fascinating old cemetery plots to peruse. It's great to walk for awhile and then simply sit and talk -- or take photographs. You can park anywhere off the main lanes. It's large - don't get lost! They usually close about an hour before sunset.

“Beautiful & great birds!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 7, 2013

This is a famous MA cemetery. The stones & sculptures are beautiful and worth a visit all seasons. Be aware, if you are going to do more than a couple of sly snapshots, you need a permit from the office.
