Owner description: Mount Auburn Cemetery was founded in 1831 as America's first landscaped cemetery. A National Historic Landmark, its renowned landscape inspired the creation of the nation's public parks. Mount Auburn was designated an Important Bird Area by the Massachusetts Audubon Society, reinforcing its status as a significant wildlife sanctuary. Still an active burial place, Mount Auburn Cemetery provides comfort and solace to countless families. The Friends of Mount Auburn Cemetery was established in 1986 to assist in the conservation of the Cemetery's natural beauty and to promote the appreciation of its cultural, historic, and natural resources. Over 100 public programs are offered annually by the Friends to educate, enrich, and inspire the community. The Friends seeks financial support for education and interpretive programs and materials for the public, specific cultural projects, and operational support for horticultural rejuvenation and the preservation of the historic monuments, structures, and archival artifacts and records.

“A cemetary - who would have thought?”

I love stopping here especially in the fall, when the foliage is magnificent. This is truly a hidden treasure, and I really love the excellent views afforded from the observation tower. With such a huge expanse of land, there's always some new landscaping to discover.

“One of my favorite places”
Reviewed November 6, 2012

Mt. Auburn Cemetery is an amazing place. It was actually used as a design inspiration for Central Park as well as other parks and cemeteries. Many historically famous people are buried there including Winslow Homer, Mary Baker Eddy, Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Fannie Farmer & many others. There are a variety of interesting monuments, chapels, tombs and other treasures to see. Each visit, you always discover something you hadn't seen before. View the Boston skyline from atop Washington Tower. It is breathtaking. Mt. Auburn Cemetery is an incredibly peaceful place to walk around and the scenery is gorgeous. I highly recommend this to anyone visiting the Boston/Cambridge area as a must see destination.

“A must see treasure in any season!”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

My husband and I enjoyed a wonderful afternoon visit to the lovely Mt. Auburn Cemetery. We have visited cemetery's around the world and this ranks high on anyone's list. It is a lovely park like setting with lifetimes of history to explore. Please make it a priority on your trip to Boston if you love nature, history and sculpture. Enjoy!

“Great place for a stroll”
Reviewed November 5, 2012

wonderful environment for a stroll. Fantastic collection of plant material and tree variety. Owl family nesting in tree 2 years ago that was the talk of Greater Boston. Lot's of graves of famous people. But overall a wonderful place to spend an afternoon.
