“perfect for a few days rest after busy Rome”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed October 11, 2012

Wonderful location. Right across the summer residence of the Pope with a magnificant view over Lake Albano. The room is basic, but OK. The restaurant is superb. Yes you have to wait long before you get your food, but enjoy the view ! The menu is OK, but not always for children. Don't hesitate to ask the waiters for alternatives of make your own suggestions. The kitchen makes you whatever you want (if they have it of course). There is no pizza on the menu, but we could eat Pizza by the pool for lunch. We went to order it downstairs. Breakfast was well organised and plenty of choise in bread, toast, fruit, eggs, bacon, meat, cheese, cake, etc.
We first went for 6 days to the city centre of Rome and came by train to Castel Gandolfo. An experience ! : a very old train brings you trough the surrounding area from Rome. The people from the hotel came to pick us up from the (mini) trainstation after a phonecall from us. After 6 days in busy Rome, Castel Gandolfo is a real treat. So quiet, grand views over the lake, the people are more gentle here than in Rome.
The only negative we can tell about this hotel that there is noting to do in the neighbourhood. We went for a walk by the lakeside. You first have to walk half a mile on the road. No sidewalk ! Then you come in a nice area with beaches and restaurants, but not very clean. The trachcans are full and it smells bad. There is trach everywere in the streets and on the beaches. It is too far to walk to Castel Gandolfo town centre. But when you ask the people from the hotel, they drive you there and they pick you up again after your visit.
The pool is superb. You have the pool almost to yourselfs. It is nog very big, but more than big enough to enjoy a swim and to be refressing. The view from the pool is sooooo beautiful.
At the end I want to say something about the weddings : we were lucky and had just 1 party in the 4 nights we stayed here. We had the same table in the restaurant, just as the other evenings. The party was loud, but sounded like fun. BUt I can imagine if you have a party every night, its no fun at all.

The hotel is nicely situated with a splendid view on the lake and the town of Castelgondolfo.
The swimming pool is ok. The rooms are modest, but some of them have a very nice terrace.
The staff is helpful. One needs a car to get around. There are plenty of good restaurants downtown.
PERFECT PLACE FOR VISITORS OF ROME. After a day in the crowds and heat a green oasis at 30 minutes of Rome.

We stayed here for 2 nights and we couldn't wait to leave. The room had a lake view but was very basic and the bathroom had a musty, damp smell. We had dinner in the hotel restaurant on the 1st night. The food was ok but we waited 45 mins for our main course which considering there were only 2 other tables occupied was not acceptable. The outdoor lighting was so poor I couldn't actually see what I was eating which is not ideal when eating steak- trying to decifer what was meat and what was fat was a fairly unpleasant experience! The room was fairly clean but the balcony was disgraceful. The patio furniture was filthy and the balcony could have done with a good scrub! The pool area was shocking- totally unkempt with absolutely no appealing features. The morning after our arrival we went down for breakfast (we had booked b&b) and chose to sit at a table with a lake view. BIG MISTAKE- the maitre'd/ waiter was not happy. He informed us that those tables were set for lunch and then proceeded to remove all the glassware and cutlery from the table which he proceeded to bang down on the neighbouring table in temper. At lunch that day there were only 3 tables occupied!! This hotel is in a beautiful location but give me Fawly Towers any day. I can't understand for the life of me how they got their rating. For the 2 days we were there there were no more than 3 tables in the restaurant occupied at any one time, the staff were not at all helpful and in cases extremely rude. This has to be the worst hotel I have ever had the misfortune to stay in. Thre whole place needs a makeover. Every part of it looks dated and extremely neglected but the biggest fault is that they don't seem to realise that "PAYING CUSTOMERS" expect certain standards and levels of courtesy.

We are now into our final day of a 14 day stay at this place and to be honest, we are looking forward to going home.
We booked this hotel after reading the generally good reviews on the booking.com website and being captivated by the beautiful pictures. In hindsight I wish we had read these trip advisor reviews more thoroughly first. We discovered the issue about weddings on trip advisor before we travelled and politely asked the question about the frequency of weddings during the dates of our stay. We understand that weddings are an important revenue stream for most hotels nowadays, however we were delighted when we were told by the hotel that none were booked and were satisfied with this answer, so did not alter our plans. This was patently a lie as there have been 8 functions in all of which 6 were wedding receptions in 13 days. Great if you are the bride and groom and their guests, and to be fair it is a great venue for them.

The only word I have for the managements attitude for rest of us poor souls who are PAYING GUESTS of the hotel is CONTEMPT or DISPREZZO if you are Italian. They just do not seem to care!

As each wedding reception was taking up more and more of the available dining space, we turned up for dinner one night to find no space for hotel guests. We enquired at the desk and were advised that we could take dinner on our room terrace and a waiter would be along in 5 minutes. Although a bit disappointed that no-one in the hotel had been courteous enough to inform us beforehand that this was the only option, we decided to turn it into a positive experience. How foolish are we? 20 minutes passed and not a tap at our door. Disappointment is now turning into upset and anger, so we decide to eat elsewhere. Again our plans are thwarted due to the number of cars that have been crammed into the free car park, blocking us in. So we return to reception to ask them to arrange the removal of other cars to allow us to leave. The receptionist enquires as to why we wish to leave, again offering us a meal in our room, by which time our room is starting to resemble the inside of a cell to us. We explain the situation and are promptly engaged into a disagreement as to how many wedding receptions there have been. Talk about throwing fuel onto the fire, my usually mild mannered partner is now becoming distraught and incandescent with anger. We need to get out and quick.

So we head into the local village and find a very nice restaurant, where the staff find space for us despite their being a obvious lack of available tables, and in the process demonstrating that there does not have to be a conflict between commercialism and good customer relations.

After a fine meal we head back to this hotel with a degree of hope that perhaps the management have realised that their behaviour makes Basil Fawlty (sorry to anyone who has never heard of him) seem the epitome of refinement, taste and good manners, hopefully to be greeted with a smile and an apology! How naive, not so much as a glance as we pass through reception, with the wedding party in full flow behind us we trudge up to our cell. It is now 11:30 and despite closing the external shutter, the double glazed doors and the curtains to our cell, the karaoke party is still loud and tuneless in our ears. So much for a peaceful and tranquil location on the shores of Lake Albano.

So what next?. I made it clear that I wish to speak to the management about their contemptuous behaviour, and I have also written to booking.com. I have not been approached by the cowardly management who seem to be adopting an Ostrich approach to their woeful mismanagement style. Booking.com did at least reply but they are quick to distance themselves from any legal obligation as an intermediary? They claim that the management had apologised and would be personally speaking to us? That was week ago and still nothing!

Before you ask, we did think about checking out and moving to another hotel, and in hindsight maybe we should have done so after the first round of parties. You always thing that things will get better, in this case they didn't.

I could whiinge on about some of the trivial faults with this hotel, but to be honest most of the staff are very nice and the place isn't too bad either, although 5 stars is a rather inflated rating. Fundamentally the faults with this place lay at the door of the management. Their focus is very much on their venue orientated business with an abject lack of care and consideration towards their other paying guests.

So I feel an obligation to warn others who may also look at the lovely images and alluring words (there is no mention of wedding parties) and see an idyllic retreat, that represents a hotel that cares for it's clientele, rather than the true picture that is a wedding venue that happens to double up as hotel on the side.

If you read this and still make a booking, don't say you haven't been warned.

We chose this hotel based on photos and their website. It seemed to be a good value and was close to our Italian family in Grottaferrata. It was horrible! We had a room in the very back corner if the hotel with a view that opened out into a maintenance courtyard. The metal blinds were down and we discovered it wasn't to disguise the view as much as it was to deaden the noise from some large compressors. The bathroom was so small that your knees hit the bidet when you sat on the toilet, and the towel rack was immediately over your head. My husband and son who are both close to six foot had to watch they didn't bash their heads after using the facilities. Additionally, they were working on the room next to ours and for two of the three days we were there, we had to contend with construction noise and beds in the hallway blocking the door to our room. My husband had to move them so we could get in and out. Our room was musty smelling and a combination of unmatched furniture and accessories. My daughter described it as, "your old spinster aunt's guest room decorated circa 1960." The promised wi-fi only worked in the hotel common areas, not in our room. Our TV was 19 inches, and was only viewable from the double bed, which was a moot point as it didn't work after the first night. We asked for help which we got, but it turned off on its own after the front desk clerk left and would not come back on. As this was the third time i had complained about the wi-fi / tv issues, I just left it go. It was obvious that I was a "problem" guest and i overheard a negative comment about me. We only stayed three days and thank goodness for that, or I would have left much sooner. The previous comments about weddings being the priority were spot on and we had similar experiences with parking, noise, and lack of restaurant. The view has to be the only reason anyone would want to get married there, as the room decor was indicative of the whole hotel and we were thankful we were not in the hall that had the overwhelming sewage smell every time we walked through. The Patio in the front was better kept than the pool area which was dirty and in disrepair. The breakfast was the high point and was one of the few things that was as advertised. Spend the extra few bucks and go somewhere else. Unless you are a wedding, a big tour group, or a business client you are not a valued guest at this hotel.

Do not go to this hotel!
Yes the setting is beautiful and you would think from the photos, tranquil. But oh how wrong you would be. We booked this lovely looking hotel for a two week peaceful holiday in July, but after booking, noticed some negative reviews regarding the use of the hotel for weddings. We contacted Booking.com who contacted the hotel and were assured that 'there were no weddings or large functions booked' during the two weeks that we were due to stay.   Reassured, we continued with our plans, only to find that during the first five days of our holiday there were no fewer than four weddings which supposedly had not been booked until after the end of May!

On the Saturday we were asked to leave the pool so that it could be used by wedding guests. As if this was not bad enough, on going down to the restaurant we were told that we were unable to eat there as once again it was being used for the wedding. No one had done us the courtesy of any prior warning and when we queried this we were told we could eat in our room and a waiter would be there in five minutes to take our order. After twenty five minutes when no one had arrived we decided to eat elsewhere, which then involved asking the receptionist to arrange for cars to be moved so that we could exit the car park!

During all this, none of the hotel staff apologised or in any way tried to make up for the disappointment and inconvenience. When we returned from our meal we then had to suffer the type and volume of music that you would expect on an 18-30 holiday on The Costas, until 1.00am.

The holiday, if you can call it that continued in this way with eight weddings in thirteen nights. Even when the weddings did not take up the whole restaurant we were unable to eat there because the noise was unbearable.

We contacted Booking.com on several more occasions but nothing changed or improved in any way and was clearly not going to as the weddings were booked and that was that!

If you are lucky enough to visit when there are no weddings it is a beautiful place, but if not, it's Hell. We wish we had taken notice of the reviews on Tripadvisor If we had our holiday might not have been ruined.

Was very impressed with this hotel just outside Rome. It was so peaceful and the views outside were stunning! The rooms were an average size and the bathrooms were clean and up to date. The hotel had electric blinds in all the rooms and some rooms were equipped with little decks for even better views. We didn't have much interaction with the staff but they didn't seem to be impressed at the fact that we were a large group staying in their hotel, but as long as you are quiet and respectful they didn't give us any trouble. If you're looking for a relaxing stay with outstanding views, then this is the hotel for you!
