Derrylahan Hostel

Spent only one night here, but would have happily stayed longer. Shaun was very welcoming and it was more like staying in his home than a hostel. It was busy but everyone was friendly and happy to have a chat. The surrounding countryside was also beautiful, perfect for walking.

We are not regular hostellers so were delighted with the great priced clean private en-suite rooms available.

The kitchen did get busy at times but everyone was very friendly and we all managed just fine. We did go at the busiest time.

Room Tip: Ask the owner he is very helpful.

True explorer's leisure spot! Spectacular views (even if the weather is impetuous..and it usually is;).
Closely enough to local pubs and shops. We stayed at the camping site so I cannot rate the inside of the hostel. But staff was welcoming and amenities (toilets & showers) were clean. Big hug to dog Lucky!:)

Stayed here on the final night of a camping tour round Ireland. We had planned to camp in Sligo, the last campsite on our camping and caravanning club map before the Sliabh Liag cliffs which we planned to visit the next day, but were put off at the sight of yet another large commercial campsite by the beach.

We had a look on our smart phones and managed to discover Derrylahon Hostel had a campsite beside it and was perfectly located within just a few km of the cliffs.

When we arrived it didn't disappoint. The camping field is a perfect size, not particularly level but there are plenty of flattish areas. Part of the reason for this is the campsite is located in a spectacular location high above a sea inlet, looking across to Sliabh Liag mountain. There were a few caravan spaces which had even more spectacular locations.

Moving round to check in and the strongest asset of the place became obvious. The owner Shaun escorted me around all the facilities to show me what was what (in tens possibly hundreds of campsites I don't think any owner has ever done that before!), and then took the time to go over and recommend several attractions in the area. He obviously has a huge passion for the area and could not have been more welcoming or helpful.

The facilities are extensive with a very well equipped campers kitchen and clean bathroom facilities.

The price for 2 camping the night was 16 euro, which compares very favourably to any of the other sites we stayed at in Ireland where the average charge seems to be more like 20 euro plus a couple of euro for showers (showers included in the price here).

We've been going to Derrylahan for longer than trip advisor has been around and it continues to provide the perfect base for a real South Donegal experience. Shaun's hearty welcome is matched by his complete knowledge of the area.

We like to camp and I challenge anyone to match the view from from the campsite.

There is a great deal to like about this corner of Donegal. Mountains, surf, sea fishing are all on your doorstep.

Fresh eggs for breakfast from Shaun's hens, fresh Salmon from Tielen pier if you are lucky a pint in the Central Bar or The Rusty Mackrel. What more could you want?

I'd camped in Derrylahan before during the busy summer season so never really had much to do with the owner apart from hello, goodbye, here's your money, the view is spectacular. The kids loved this place with the chickens running round and the big kitchen for family meals with their cousins.

This time the wife and I booked a room due to the inclement weather. Shaun the owner was very welcoming and convivial. We'd downloaded stuff on the IPad thinking of an evening sipping wine after dinner but we ended up spending the evening in the living swapping stories and chattering away.

The rooms were typical hostel fare, basic and clean. The kitchen was well appointed and we managed patatas bravas and burgers plus a full blown fry in the morning with some of Shaun's free range eggs.

We left with a cheery goodbye and will be back again.

It's a very handy spot for Slieve League, Malinbeg, Muckross and other hiking / rock climbing areas.

I just spent a lovely 2 days in Derrylahan hostel. The owner, Shaun, was very friendly and seemed happy to chat. I'd definitely recommend the hostel, especially if you're lucky enough to get a clear day to climb Slieve League.
