Apparently the hotel has changed owner. We booked on the same day over the phone and they did not tell us that we were booked in the building nearby, that has nothing of the historical hotel. The room was ok, not sure is worth the price. When you book ask where they put you.

Hotels that have real character are tough to find in Iceland so this place was a real lucky real gem to find. I was hoping that it would look as good for real as it did in online photos and it didn't disappoint!

It touts itself as the oldest hotel in the country and it has been restored in top fashion. It is in great condition with exposed wood floors and exposed beams and authentic finishings from the late 19th century. It's located right in town just off the main street, so you can't miss it.

The room was huge by Icelandic standards with not one but TWO double beds. Great lighting and windows. The furnishings were also all tasteful vintage wood. Cathedral ceilings and stained glass. Really well appointed overall. TV, a clock radio and free in-room wifi too. The bathroom was small (but OK) with a smallish shower stall and vintage finishings again but everything worked as it should. The room had a great wood smell to it too. Nice.

I asked our host about a rumour that I had read online about the hotel being haunted, and she confirmed that people HAD reported strange, spooky events during their stay, but our host said that she had never experienced anything "supernatural" in her 7 years working there...And we didn't either during our 1 night stay.

There is no pool, fitness room, business centre, restaurant on-site, etc. If it had more amenities to offer I certainly would have given it 5 out of 5, but was still totally satisfied with it just the way it is, though it *is* a little on the pricey-side.

In short though: I was really impressed with this hotel. Stay if you can!

Visited in early May when most attractions such as museums are closed, so must be low season. Hotel was open when we arrived, but nobody was there. After three telephone calls to answering machine the owner arrived and showed us our room. It is an experience staying at the Tindastoll. It is like spending the night in a folk museum. Not really what we were looking for. We were the only residents. Good breakfast the first morning and advice on how to spend our time in Saudarkrokur. However, when we got back that evening our room had not been touched. As nobody was in the hotel I had to make our bed and get the towels picked up off the floor and dried. Fortunately there was a radiator. Another guest stayed that night and breakfast was very self-service and one table was piled high with dirty towels. Out of the four hotels we stayed at during our trip, this was by far the worst. Stay was redeemed by the fact that Olaf Huis Restaurant just down the road was probably the best restaurant we used in Iceland. Great food, especially the soup, and very reasonable prices. Don't miss it.

Room Tip: May be far better if you go 'in season'. Basic cleanliness good, but our room was not servi...

This is a lovely old hotel. Friendly welcome, owner/manager very helpful. We had a gorgeous spacious room. Room sizes vary. Cosy bar and hot pool. Good breakfast.
This is like an great old classic car quirky but a joy to drive. The hotel iscertainly very comfortable. This is what you come to Iceland for.
Excellent fish restaurant nearby. It is very popular so you may have to book in season.
A typical Icelandic working fishing town.

Since we're traveling in the off-season, most tourist hot spots are closed and hotels are fairly cheaper. Hotel Tindastoll, however, was still the most expensive place we stayed (about 3000 ISK more than most). We were the only people at the hotel, including the owner - we had to call when we arrived and wait at the door for somebody to let us in, and then we were given a key to the front door as well and asked to lock up when we left.

The room itself was cozy and clean, but besides that we didn't receive any of the additional amenities their website and in-hotel reading material boasted (most disappointingly the stone hot tub, which was a drawing point during our booking). During travel season I'm sure this place is fantastic, but be warned that if you are traveling in the winter you might not get all you think you're paying for.

Out of 8 nights, this was the hotel with most characteristic. We had a very large room for 4. Two beds, one on either side of the room. Bathroom was a bit small, but manageable to say the least. The steps up to the room were small and steep. Nearby, there's a great restaurant you shouldn't miss! Olafhus was amazing.
