“Best Place to view Northern Lights from your room window :)”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 7, 2013

Have just returned from a trip to Iceland using 4 different hotels over 8 nights. Fosshotel Reykholt was the best. Big rooms, helpful staff, nice facilities. The location sounded isolated and looked like a bad choice but the best part was the view of Northern Lights from your hotel room window.

They had a "Northern Lights Night Watchman" who would wake you up as and when he notices the lights. That service was commendable and was so helpful. I would rate this place as a best location to view the lights.

There is a small hill across the road, about 100 mts away, where it is pitch dark to enjoy the beauty of the dancing and dazzling show. I personally waited on top of the hill for about 3 hours and viewed the spectacle for almost 2.5 hours. This is something I will never forget in my lifetime.

Iceland is the best place to see the lights and Reykholt the best bet.

Expensive is the word for all Nordic nations and Iceland is no exception but it is worth every penny you spend. It has everything that one can imagine to see - Sun, Rain, Clouds, Sand Storms, Snow Storms, Icebergs, Frozen lakes, Waterfalls, Glacier walks and to top them all, beautiful Volcanic mountains,

Just go! It's now or never in the life :-).

Room Tip: Ask for the rooms facing the roadside if you are chasing the Northern Lights.

We visited this hotel in January as part of a Northern Lights explorer holiday and we were so impressed with how friendly it was. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff, including finding kettles and tea trays for a large number of thirsty British tourists. We emailed ahead to request a superior room and we were not disappointed by the size and quality of the facilities.

The food was good quality home cooking, nothing fancy.

The location of the hotel is stunning if you like being in a remote village and we will certainly be going back there for a summer chillax.

Have just returned from a trip to Iceland to chase the Northern Lights. This was a group travel package using 4 different hotels over 7 nights. Fosshotel Reykholt was agreed to be the best. Big rooms, ample meals and most helpful staff. The location might seem isolated but that is true for many hotels in the Icelandic interior. Costs are what is to be expected in Iceland. Just grimace and get on with it. Enjoy a remarkable country

We had to get transferred to this hotel at the last minute due to the weather.
We arrived to be told that we would be the only guests staying at the hotel (just after superstorm Sandy)
There is nowhere else to eat for miles around so we ate at the restaurant both nights £55 for two courses for two people with a drink each. My wife is vegetarian, so we sent an email ahead of our arrival to make sure they had something for her, that email was replied to, but nothing was passed to the chef, nonetheless when they did produce the food, it was very enjoyable ( you would hope so with only two people to feed)
The heating broke down in the wellness centre, so we could not use the facilities the first night.
It consists of about 6 rooms with different facilities, like massage charge, vibrating bed, SAD lamps, aromatherapy... It also had hot tubs but we didnt fancy using them as they were not particularly private.
We had a good sized room ( I think we were upgraded for free) it is very 90's but comfortable.
I would suggest only staying here for a single night as part of a trip round Iceland, otherwise you will get bored, as all the local attractions can be seen In 1 day.
You have to pay for wifi, 1500ISK per day per device! Or 500ISK for an hour

This is the third Fosshotel we stayed in during our recent visit to Iceland. It was chosen because we wanted to see northern light. After stayed in Skaftafell, Husavik, Reykholt was the last one. I must admit that out of the three, this would be the last one that I like. Room was basic, or say rather old, it was spacious since it was a room cater for disabled guest. Staffs were friendly and helpful, while I check-in, I was reminded that a large function was going to take place in the restaurant and time that I should avoid using the restaurant to save me waiting for long. The dinner was fair, wouldn't say anything special about it, and I found a hair in my seafood pasta. The breakfast was disapointed, when we arrived, although not particular early, what was left (food) was like it been through a battle, with "left-over" looking like food. The coffee machine wasn't working properly either.

We went to Reykholt in hopes of seeing the Northern Lights. The hotel is very clean and basic. My only suggestion is really for Iceland as a whole - it would be so nice to have a full size bed that wasn't just two twins stuck together! That said, the dinner made up for the beds. We hadn't expected such a nice dinner, but this hotel has a great chef! The cured salmon appetizer was tender and tasty - not oily - and served on a nice bed of arugula with a dill sauce. I had the lamb entree and it was delicious and tender in a rosemary sauce with a perfectly cooked baked potato. And best of all, we left dinner to walk outside and saw an amazing display of the Northern Lights!!

Stayed here for one night during my holiday in Iceland. We weren't expecting much as Reykholt is fairly small and in the middle of nowhere, but we were up for a nice suprise. The staff was very friendly, the food nice (and not expensive), breakfast good, rooms big and clean... all in all a very pleasant experience! Close by and the Hraunfossar waterfalls (about 20 mins by car) and of course Snorri's bath and a small museum. Would definitely recommend.
