“The best desert on our road trip alng the south coast”
Reviewed September 11, 2013

As part of a group of six friends I spent three happy nights in the cosy Hotel Anna. Most rooms are situated adjacent to the attractive reception area which also doubles up as the lounge area for the hotel. Bedrooms were comfortable although I struggled to get the English channels on the TV –probably my fault. Evening meals include a soup starter in the price of the main course which were consistently tasty. The main courses consist of the ubiquitous artic char, horse, lamb and whale with a poor pasta vegie option. Meat courses come with potatoes and fish with a sort of pearl barley risotto –one night it was good another not cooked properly. If you don’t fancy the barley potatoes are willing substitute. Breakfasts are very good with lots of lovely fresh bread and a real treat in Iceland crispy warm bacon. The resulting bacon sandwiches a delight. This restaurant seems popular and was well patronised on every night of our stay. Icelandic food is basic and one can only eat so much arctic char but at this hotel the food was decently cooked and the soup especially good. A coconut and rhubarb desert was the best sweet thing we tasted on our road trip along the south coast. The hot tub was warm and clean although the dash outside to access it was a bit of a shock to the system and are semi naked bodies running though the reception area not a pretty sight for the more refined guests. The few members of staff we had contact with were happy and helpful

Room Tip: If on the ground there is a bit of noise from the rooms upstairs

We stayed at the Country Hotel Anna as we were driving along the ring road. I greatly enjoyed our stay and would recommend it to anyone who is thinking about staying in the area.

Pros:
1. The service was very good. We were greeted as soon as we rang the bell for check-in, check out was prompt and everything was neat and tidy.

2. The food was awesome. The hotel has an excellent restaurant built in with a good mix of Icelandic and western fare. You also get a free breakfast, which is a phenomenal value.

3. Cozy, unique rooms. We stayed in a quaint loft room with a very comfortable bed. You do truly feel like you are staying in a farmhouse. The bathroom was functional and clean, as one would expect at this level of accomodation.

4. Surroundings. The hotel sits right at the base of the Eyjafjallajökull Glacier, which gives you a very imposing backdrop. It is also on a farm full of adorable Icelandic horses and has local hiking trails if you are not off to the more exciting destinations.

5. Free, good internet. A minor issue, but a lot of places in Iceland do not offer Free Internet, but the Anna's is free and functional.

Cons:
1. Navigation. Only small issue was that it is EXTREMELY easy to drive by this place. We actually did it twice because there is only one small sign and it is not really on a "road" per se. Not a big problem, but a bigger sign (or one before the exact driveway) would be super helpful.

Room Tip: All of the rooms are unique, so feel free to ask about the exact details of yours when booking.

Good position under Eyjafjallajökull volcano and next to the n. 1 / Hringvegur road. Beautiful and spacious rooms; unfortunately our bathroom has no window. Rich and tasty breakfast. Excellent service: helpful and polite staff.

The hotel has 7 rooms and antique furniture. You could feel 'Anna' everywhere. Tasty diner and breakfast, very friendly staff. We had room 4 (upstairs). The bathroom was rather small. Free hottub and sauna. It's a shame that we haven't make time for a walk in the neighbourhood but we were a bit tired and we stayed for only one night.

During a long and extremely rainy day in Iceland we decided to make a reservation at Country Hotel Anna for lunch.
Because of the rain and a not wise visit to Seljalandfoss (a fall that you can pass behind with all the consequence of water on you) we were completely soggy and, to frame the picture, our car got broken.
We made a call to the restaurant telling them that we had to wait the mechanic, and the owner offered to come and bring us to the restaurant with her own car (we were 4 adults and 2 childrens).
When we arrived they gave us a full dining room with hairdryers allowing us to change and dry our clothes.
The restaurant and the hotel are part of a bigger charming farm that has been home of the Icelandic writer Sigridur Anna Jongsdottir (Anna of Moldnupur)' whose story is very interesting and well described in hotel brochures.
In addition we had the occasion to taste the excellent food of the restaurant. A savory vegetable soup was served to everyone. We tried three main courses: arctic char, cod and lamb. All of them were top marks, above all the lamb that was one of the best ever tried.
Desserts were average: good rhubarb pie, but the chocolate cake was too sticky.
Great bread and butter offered.
The staff, beyond what I described at the beginning, has been kind and attentive over the normal behaviour.
One point more for the kindness.

Couldn't recommend this place enough. Its nestled at the bottom of the hills in a tiny hamlet. We stayed in room number 1 and loved it. The antique furniture gave the room a cosy charm. Our room had glass doors that opened to give a view of the surrounding countryside and I loved the ponies and foals who grazed a few feet away. We had dinner in the quaint little restaurant. It was expensive but tasty and included a free soup and coffee. In the room there was detailed information for walks in the area so we took a stroll in the evening sunshine to the gorge after dinner. Idyllic! We only stayed for one night and wished it could have been more...

Country Hotel Anna is nestled in the foothills of the nearby mountains. The hotel had an old-time quaintness about it and thick curtains to keep out the light. Although room 2 was a bit cramped, we enjoyed it very much. Dinner and breakfast is served at the hotel and this makes it very convenient because there are not many other places out in the country. If you like to hike, you can go behind the hotel, through the gates, where you can spend some time with friendly Icelandic horses. As we were starting our hike, we were met by a little terrier dog, who led us up the mountain to some beautiful Icelandic scenery, including a fabulous gorge with numerous waterfalls. If I were to visit Iceland again, I would definitely make Country Hotel Anna another visit. Make sure that you save a few hours to hike behind the hotel, you won't regret it!
