“Quiet country hotel and we had a pleasant stay”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed November 9, 2012

The hotel is a family run concern and is a "country" hotel. It is remote and when we stayed, quiet. I would agree with earlier reviews, in our room off the reception/lounge area you could hear noise when people were there. However as it was so quiet this wasn't a problem. The restaurant was pleasant but lacked atmospere, again in a country fashion and the food excellent and very good value. Breakfast was adequate with enough to fill you up before travelling on.
The hot tub, sauna and changing area was in an attached outbuilding and felt slightly old fashioned, little more than a garage but you're not paying top dollar for this place.
This hotel would suite anyone who stears clear of standard corporate box hotels and is enjoyable for anyone with a sense of adventure. It made a pleasant change.

We stayed in Country Hotel Anna for two nights in October. We got the recommendation from Frommers and it proved to be quite accurate. Although we wanted to stay three nights, they only had openings for two. At that we were able to make the long drive to Jokulsarlon in the shadow of Vatnajokull as well as explore around Eyjafjallajokull. One more or even two more days would have been perfect. Our room on the main floor was comfortable and the dinner meals were very good. Breakfast was also very good. We didn't use the hot tub in the back. Again a good choice for being somewhat central for exploring South Iceland

Beautifully decorated and authentically charming! We have nothing bad to say about this hotel except perhaps for one thing: the bed in our room was minuscule! For this reason, we didn’t have the best night sleep to be honest. On a good note though, we had a private entrance to our room which was extremely useful for us! We were able to sneak in and sneak out of our room on multiple occasions in order to go catch a glimpse of the amazing northern lights! There is also a lovely restaurant in this hotel which we unfortunately didn’t have a chance to try – except for the decent breakfast included.

As others have mentioned, I had higher expectations based upon the reviews but I found the hotel to be just above average. The room we had, in the newer building, had ok views (of a field and the parking lot) and an outside door but seemed to try to be "antique." The double bed was quite small and neither my husband or I slept well. Our dinner in the restaurant was okay. Nothing special; just another expensive meal. We did enjoy a nice hike into the hills with the horses behind the hotel. The owners were very kind, and the location is well suited for seeing sights in the area.

I arrived late, just before 9 PM, after a long day. The restaurant was probably closing but even so no one asked if I had any dinner.

The room was on the second floor. It was comfortable and provided a good nights sleep. No view to speak of since most of it overlooked a garage and a roof. The television, like many in Iceland, was wall mounted at an angle that was not comfortable.

I was happy to see a water kettle in the room. This was true for about half of my rooms in Iceland.

I found the breakfast to be very average to even a little below average. There was no fresh fruit. As I recall, orange juice but no apple juice. The best items were the jams and the freshly baked bread. Otherwise, this was not a memorable or especially nice breakfast.

A lovely small old fashioned hotel with very helpful staff and excellent homely meals - a perfect quiet rural base for volcano treks in the south and a hot tub that was perfect after a long day. One of the few Icelandic hotels we stayed in that provided tea/coffee making facilities in the room. Walls were thin but this didn't disrupt our sleep.

After a one night stay in Reykjavik, we were ready to leave the city and head for the more isolated parts of the island. The Country Hotel Anna proved to be an excellent "jumping off" point for our fthree day exploration of the southern coast of Iceland. The Hotel, itself, is a quaint, seven room, bed and breakfast type hotel. We liked our corner room, on the second floor, which afforded wonderful views of the surrounding area. We especially liked the "tea area" of the room -- complete with two comfy sitting chairs and a nice selection of teas.

The Anna Hotel provided a pleasant breakfast each morning, including fresh, home made bread, various jams, cold meats/fish, cheeses and skyr. We did have dinner one evening at the Inn. It was very good, but a bit of the pricey side. We elected to try other dining venues in the area. In this regard, we did find a delightful restaurant just a short distance from the Hotel, heading east on the Ring Road, just before Local Road 243. It was called the Old Cow Barn. Just opened within the past year, it is a working farm which serves up reasonably priced food to the "locals." I especially liked the chocolate cake!!

From Country Hotel Anna, we took day trips east (to the Reykjadalur Hike) and west on the Ring Road (to Vik). Our fondest memory of the trip was the Reykjadalur hike which, after a ninety minute hike, culminated in a thoroughly relaxing and refreshing soak in the river (heated by the geothermal springs), surrounded by gorgeous scenery. Lastly, within a very short distance of the Hotel is the spectacular Skogafoss Waterfall and the must do hiking trails of Fimmborduhals.

On the whole, we enjoyed our stay at the Country Hotel Anna. My only "complaint" is that, at least from my perspective, it was pricey. In fairness, however, that just may be the price of visiting Iceland. We paid over $230 per night (all taxes included).

Room Tip: I would definitely ask for a room in the "old" section of the Inn. We had a lovely corner...
