Owner description: Eyjafjallajokull Visitor Centre opened on April 14th, 2011 exactly one year after the start of the Eyjafjallajokull eruption. Because it’s at the foot of the volcano, visitors feel first-hand what it is like to have a huge volcano looming over their shoulders. A short film (20 min) portrays the spectacular natural event, and the hectic times and incredible challenges met by the family farm of Thorvaldseyri.

Liked the movie; liked the handmade gifts that were on offer. Disliked nothing. Clean restrooms for patrons only. Liked the view of the surrounding farms from this spot.

While normally closed from the middle of September, we were lucky enough to drive passed when it was open for a pre-booked tour. The family from the farm opposite were forward thinking enough to take lots of photographs and videos at the same time as trying to keep their farm going during the 2010 eruption of Eyjafjallajokull just above them. The video was beautifully put together and narrated, and brought home the stoicism and independence it must take to live is such a remote, potentially dangerous location.

We stopped on the main road to catch a glimpse of the farmhouse we had seen in lessons (It was on most of the news reports at the time of the 2010 eruption) and the guide suggested we make an extra stop at the visitor centre..it was one of the best things we did on our trip. A short but beautifully shot film tells the story of the eruption from the family's point of view, and was narrated by the wife/mother. She was actually running the centre that day and spoke to us all (giving the students all a sticker for their notebooks/laptops!) The farm was one of the most successful in Iceland because the farmer was innovative and introduced new technologies and tried new things, and this visitor centre is the next 'new thing', the next diversification...they have made it really interesting and well worth a trip...

The farmer and family featured in the short film are actually the people who built the centre and run it. I happened to be there twice - first time met the farmer and second time met his wife - I couldn't help but ask her how on earth she had managed to get her home clean after the ash! Lovely, resourceful, inspiring people.

The tour company 'Gateway to Iceland' try to include this stop in their South coast Adventure tour, however the visitor centre isn't always open in winter months

We were not expecting much and we were amazed. The twenty minutes film about Eyjafjallajökull Eruption is beautiful and touching. The place is small as well as the gift shop but all is very cute. Moreover it is on the n. 1 / Hringvegur road.
