“Nice accommodation but fairly expensive”
Reviewed September 9, 2013

We stayed there as a family of four, two parents and two young adults. The parents had a private bathroom, the boys a shared one which they said was ok as not used by too many guests. I particularly appreciated the hot tub after a day of hiking. Bathrooms were tiny and did not have a hair dryer. The rooms were nice, spacious and quiet. Internet was only provided in the main area, not in the rooms. The outdoor swimming pool cold not be used as it was being refilled with water, which was a big disappointment. The breakfast was rather basic. In fact there was a big group of over 20 people at the same time which seemed to overwhelm the host, and we had to differ breakfast by 30 min. The restaurant annexed to the hotel was serving excellent food, probably the best of the entire week we spent in Iceland, but very expensive. You cold hardly have a meal for less than 60 euros per person, starter + main and beverages, and the menu only had one option (horse steak). Service was excellent. Obviously this was the only hotel and the only restaurant in the area (50km) so this explains probably the price. We would go back without hesitation.

I spent one night here in August and even if the climate was cold we have decided to try the natural swimming pool: this proved to be a good idea since the view is amazing, When it's really cold it's possible to warm themselves in the external hot tub.
Free wifi is available, rooms are clean, all that you may need is available in the room.
The restaurant is excellent, i have eaten chicken salad (delicious) and chocolate cake (that was delicious, too).
It's not economical but you know, when you travel to iceland you must have enough money to spend since a normal dinner require about 30 euros.

We specially drove 45 minuten from Guesthouse Hrauneyjar to Leirubakki because we remembered from our stay last year how good the restaurant was. We had a faboulous dinner last night : friendly staff, delicious food, nice and relaxing environment. It was really worth to make the effort to drive there. Finally we paid same price as the buffet + drinks at Hrauneyjar, but had 100 times more satisfaction.

We had one night at Leirubakki and wasn't disappointed at all. The area is really beautiful and there is a lot to see and do in the surroundings.
They have a Viking hot pool a bit away from the main buildings (180 m), and you can enjoy the great view of the landscape and specially the vulcano, Hekla, when you sit in the warm water. There is also a hot tub just next to the hotel rooms if you don't want to walk to the viking pool.
In the same building as the restaurant is there a Helka Center, where you can learn a lot about the vulcano. If you are interested in vulcano you have to see this center.
The rooms are clean, simple and there is everything you need. We couldn't find anything to complain about. The breakfast in the morning is at typically icelandic breakfast. There were plenty of food and the service was good.
We also enjoyed a wonderful meal in the restaurant. You can see Helka through the big windows in the restaurant and is just the perfect surroundings for at great meal. The waiters were very friendly and professional. I had some really tasteful lamb, some had horse filet and some had lobster soup. Those who had lobster soup said it was the best they ever had tasted.

I have just visited Leirubakki in group of 12 friends that meets yearly. This is the best yet, everything was to our satisfaction. From we arrive in the afternoon until we left late morning the next day.
The staff was exceptionally friendly. The rooms good . Free wi-fi in the reception area and in the sitting room.
The dinner we had ordered was excellent. The breakfast was homemade bread and a beautiful spread.
On the whole we were so pleased with the stay that we talked about returning there as a group.

We arrived in the afternoon without booking in advance and were apparently the only guests in the hotel that night. It became clear immediately that the hotel manager wasn't willing to perform any work for us. We could not have dinner, the sauna could only be turned on after repeatedly asking, the hot tub was not clean, the outside pool was overrun with water and too cold, horseriding was not possible even though this was mentioned everwhere to be possible all year long, and the advertised massages and facial treatments were out of the question entirely. The hotel manager responded really ennoyed and even angry when asking about these things. Also no wifi in the very simple rooms. Definitely no value for money!

Very friendly and helpfull staff.
Location was between many places that we visited.

They also have free wi-fi in reception and "livingroom".

The rooms are simple, but on the other hand, when you visit Iceland, you should not stay in your room.
The bathrooms are not new, but they at kept in shape and have what I consider, high standard for beeing a simple hostel.
