“Cosy Oasis in Southern Iceland”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 2, 2014

Stayed here on the final leg of a 1-week tour of the south icelandic coast.
Well-appointed rooms equipped with all modern amenities, good wifi, in cosy surroundings.
Food was adequate and well prepared with prompt and attentive service.
Appreciated the wakeup call for Northern lights on our final night ... although the display was not as dramatic compared to our previous sitings in other cities.
Overall, it lived up to it's hype and a must-stay when visiting this amazing island.

Room Tip: Ask for rooms facing the north with a porch outside the room ... these offer the best views for the...

We hired a car from the airport so we could tour the south coast. Within this review, I'll be discussing all hotels.

Day 1
Our first stop was the volcano hotel in Vik, which took about 3 hours. The roads are very quiet and easy to navigate everywhere. The volcano hotel is a complete gem, the rooms are nice and modern.

Day 2
The following day we went out with Johann to the Eyja......volcano. We scrambled up in the snow which was lots of fun, although we didn't make it to the top. This was definitely a memorable highlight. We then travelled 4 hours further east to Hofn where we stayed at Smyrlabjorg. The drive here was stunning with the snow capped mountains and frozen lakes. We even saw the northern lights on our journey. The hotel here was faultless. The rooms were clean and spacious. Food was also nice.

Day 3
We started driving back west and stopped off at Jokulsarlon. This is where the glacier and icebergs are. It is one of the most beautiful natural places I've ever seen. It was so calm and quiet, apart from the seals making noise. This was also a highlight for me. We continued our drive for another 3 hours to stay at hotel ranga.

Hotel ranga was the most expensive and luxurious hotel of the trip. Staff were all welcoming. We stayed in room 10, which overlooked the hot tub, which was our first stop watching the sun go down. The food here was amazing, similar price to a meal in London, but better quality of food. The staff wake you up if the northern lights come out, but they didn't.

Day 4
We drove to gulfoss, which is a waterfall partly frozen. It was very cold and windy, but worth seeing. While up there we went snow mobiling, higher up in the mountain. It was beautifully cold and fun. We then visited the geysir where the main one spouts water in the air every 20minutes.

We spent another night at hotel ranga. Unfortunately, we still had no wake up call.

Day 5
Drive back towards the airport. On our way, visited the blue lagoon. It was very packed and touristy. I think it would be ideal if perhaps you went later in the day when quiet.

Overall, we had such an amazing experience in Iceland and will remember this adventure forever. I definitely recommend a road trip rather than going with a group as you can so much more.

The hotel is nice. It is not the experience I thought for the price or rating. However, everything is much more expensive so comparing it to a lower value hotel in the states seems more fair. It is more like a large nicer bed and breakfast than it is a highend hotel.

They did call for the wake up service for the Northern Lights which was nice. The location was beautiful make, sure your room faces the river and mountains.

We stayed in this hotel in Hella in order to catch the Northern Lights and explore the surrounding countryside. We were not disappointed! We stayed in their standard double room which faced the road. When we asked for a swap to the room on the other side facing the countryside, the receptionist helpfully informed us that our side is better for viewing the northern lights as it faces north! She was not wrong. When the northern lights finally made an appearance on our last night, we were able to see it from our window! (Having stood outside for the first 20 minutes in -7C!) It was wonderful. The room is small but perfectly cosy and adequate. The bathroom is also clean and efficient. You could pay a lot more for the suites but we were happy with our package. The breakfast was plentiful and fresh - lots of choices. The restaurant food was expensive but very nice. All in all we would recommend this - beats one of these booze cruise package to a soulless hotel in Reykjavik!

Room Tip: Rooms facing the road are better for seeing the Northern Lights. There is a sheet at the reception...

Our room was small and cozy. Great shower and whirlpool tub. Out back are hot tubs, fantastic while you look at the river. Central to many sights, we had a car. No aurora activity, but the bar had nice drinks! Food was fabulous.

Whilst it may be difficult to find a poor hotel in Iceland there are one or two gems scattered around, Ranga is certainly a gem. Nothing in this amazing country is cheap and this hotel is no different.

The hotel is on the south coast not far from Hela, it is right on route 1 located approx 1.75 hours from Reykjavik and 2 hours from Keflavik airport. Be careful during the winter, the most direct route is across the pass on route 1, which can get snow bound. Our europcar Honda 4x4 had studded winter tyres which I believe is pretty standard. It's location is perfect for exploring the golden circle plus a few other local surprises. As ever in Iceland, get a good map, look around you, make the effort and you will find interesting stuff.

Feb 2014 was our second visit having previously stayed in May 2012, this time we pushed the boat out and booked junior suite, on arrival we found ourselves allocated in the Asia suite. We were somewhat exited before arriving wondering which room we would get, we weren't let down the room was very well thought out and certainly original. The room has a Japanese theme with one side lined with sliding walls The huge raised bed was comfy and the sunken table and nice touch, but don't slide backwards in the floor level seats as carpet burn will result from the matted floor, (should have known better). We had great fun getting to grips with the square sit in bath once we worked it out.

The three sided glazed restaurant is a centre feature of the hotel and is warm and welcoming. The young team are confident and knowledgeable but can flap I little when very busy. We didn't find any stuffiness and asking the barman to simply suggest a local beer will reveal a sophisticated depth of knowledge, Iceland has a fine selection of beer.

Wine is very expensive but this may be as a result of importation so we did not indulge. The food however is very good, these guys know how to cook and produce a

Visited this excellent hotel for half-term treat. We saw the Northern Lights within an hour of arrival, and several more times over our two night stay. The stars were amazing too. Warm, comfortable hotel with friendly staff and excellent food. The waffle iron on the breakfast buffet was a great hit with our children!

Room Tip: A north facing room may mean you see the Northern Lights without having to freeze outside.
