We stayed for 2 nights on our 3 night trip to Iceland. We self drove and found the hotel easily with our gps. When we arrived we were upgraded to a deluxe room which gave us a larger room, large flat screen tv (with English tv). We had access to the hot tubs and a view of the river. The room was excellent with a large bed and large bathroom. It was warm and comfortable and you can order room service at no extra cost. The only fault I can find is that the large bath which had a massage and bubble function was faulty. The breakfasts were possibly the best we've ever had with a selection too large to mention here but fresh fruit which is hard to come by in Iceland at this time of year was a great extra. The owner is very friendly and came to speak to us on our 1st night when we were having a drink in the upstairs bar. He also came to speak to us when we ate in the restaurant the next evening. This really does make a difference to the atmosphere to the hotel. Desk staff are excellent, professional, knowledgable and friendly. We were recommended hotel ranga by friends and would recommend to anyone who is going to Iceland. It's worth the extra.

The first day we arrived we signed up (as you must on sheet on lobby desk if you wish to be awakened for the Northern Lights), the Northern Lights appeared twice. Rooms in the front look somewhat north, so you can see the lights from those rooms. Rooms in the back, like ours, have a magnificent river view and close by outdoor Jacuzzi, but must try to see the lights from the porch or the very icy parking lot.

Due to the ambient light from the hotel, you must be able to leave the security of the front porch to attempt useful photography. Hence no photos for us during out stay (the parking lot and surrounding area continued to be VERY slippery).

Rooms are decent size but try to go for the deluxe which are a tad bigger or even the hard-to-get suites. Our deluxe room had its own Jacuzzi but wasn't the most secure tub to get in and out of.

Food is excellent, but repeated so you can get a bit bored over a 4-day stay (I found somewhere else for us to go one night).

Main floor Bar right off the dining area is wonderfully funky and has a happy hour on beer and wine but all treats are extras. Actually everything, even coffee is extra. There is also another bar area upstairs with great views but it was seldom used as the poor wait staff has to run up and down the stairs to serve those up there (there are no elevators in this hotel).

I asked and there is one handicapped room.

The front desk is ever helpful and can arrange pretty much any form of transportation or guide-assisted travel you want. Brochures offering adventures are plentiful. The staff is also very thoughtful. The last night we were there we got a Northern Lights wake-up call but an hones "their not very good tonight" observation from the caller so happily stayed in our warm bed.

We had no problems with the cleanliness but the friends that came with us warned us not to look under the beds, as their was full of dust bunnies.

No point in reiterating all the positives pointed out by others. This hotel is truly excellent, and expensive. Here's a tip - if you want to be conveniently located next to one of the outdoor hot tubs, then you should ask for room #8 (it's a deluxe room). The tub is right outside room 8. You just step outside, slide precariously down the short 5 foot slope to the tub, and hop in. One warning: don't set your towel on the tub shelf as it will get wet when water slops over the tub.

Other things to note - dinner is expensive but excellent. If they offer reindeer carpaccio as a starter, try it. We almost didn't but did the last night and it was fantastic!

There's a small grocer and a place to buy wine & alcohol just down the rode in Hella.

If you can afford it, definitely have the hotel arrange a jeep tour of the Golden Circle, it's totally worth it. If it's summer time and you have a 4 wheel drive vehicle, you could do it yourself. But if it's winter and you're at all concerned about driving on icy roads, then leave it to the Icelanders. The guy who drove us around was a great driver, very personable, and a real pleasure.

Room Tip: Room 8 (on the river side), the outdoor hot tub is right there.

As usual the standard is very high, staff were all very friendly and helpful. Services are excellent and food is excellent especially the bread.
Room again was very clean and warm, the bed was very comfortable. Bathroom was clean though the panel of the bath was loose.
All in all a lovely place to stay.

As Iceland's top resort hotel the Ranga' lives up to the awards and reputation. Don't expect lush landscaping, spa's, pools and other toys here as the challenging climate and surroundings result in an inward facing experience - especially in winter. But right from the welcome to the attentive and cheerful service approach, good rooms and great dining -it is clear that the captain of this ship has got it absolutely right and is managing to maintain exceptional standards. We only stayed three nights and did not see the lights - the whole reason for travelling - but the simple fact that the disappointment has not spoilt a great break illustrates just how good Ranga is. Of course quality like this costs, and it really does here, but never has ' you get what you pay for ' been more accurate. Don't hesitate to stay here.

We stayed two nights at this ranch style hotel near Hella, using it as a base to travel across southern Iceland (which was maybe a bit ambitious as it was a 3 hour drive to the Iceberg Lagoon - Jökulsárlón!). The room was clean and comfortable (although with slightly questionable décor) and the staff were extremely helpful and helped us book a snowmobile driving experience with a local provider.

An excellent buffet breakfast was provided and (due to the remote location of the hotel) we also ate dinner in the restaurant on both nights. The dinner was fantastic (although a little pricey) and there were two vegetarian options available which I was very pleased with. There is a good view of the river at the back of the hotel (during daylight hours) and there is a communal room with a pool table.
