“Absolutely Perfect!”
Reviewed March 27, 2013

We stayed here for 2 nights hoping to see the elusive Northern Lights (which we did!) you can put your name on a list in reception and the staff will call you at first sign of the lights, whatever the time! The Hotel is a huge ranch style building set on the Banks of the beautiful River Ranga. We were met in reception by the owner who was warm and welcoming, our room, though only a standard, overlooked the river and had a hot tub right outside the door! Lovely! The staff were very friendly and gave us lots of info on what to do and see in the area. We found some lovely waterfalls, hot springs & beautiful black sand beaches - stunning scenery! The restaurant is expensive, but no more so than other hotels in Iceland, and the food was excellent!...A cheaper menu can be found upstairs in the very comfy bar area. The room itself was very comfy, plenty of crisp white towels, bathrobes and slippers for the hot tub & a good supply of toiletries. We would recommend this hotel as the perfect place to see the Northern Lights & as a base for seeing the best of Southern Iceland! Fantastic!

Room Tip: Odd number rooms overlook the river.

We decided to book a long weekend in Iceland in the hopes of seeing the Northern Lights. After much research we decided on the lovely Hotel Ranga, touted by some as the best place in the world to see the Northern Lights. Nature & the hotel did not disappoint! Our timing was perfect and we saw the lights both nights that we stayed. The staff at the hotel were incredibly helpful and made sure we received the call we requested when the lights appeared! They also went so far as to announce in the restaurant during our late dinner that the lights were in the sky and they were fine with every single guest running for the door to watch then return later to finish dining!
We stayed in a deluxe room facing the river and loved it. Immaculately maintained and well-appointed it was the perfect base for our stay. I highly recommend Hotel Ranga to anyone visiting. We rented a car from Budget (fast, easy and less expensive than other companies) and did the lovely Golden Circle drive from Keflavik airport. On our way home we drove to the Blue Lagoon for a few hours to experience the relaxing waters before our flight.
The hotel restaurant is fabulous and, coming from NY, we are surrounded by our share of great restaurants. Hotel Ranga's food far surpassed the quality of what we typically experience in NY and the salmon entree was, hands down, the best we have ever had, ANYWHERE! We will absolutely be returning!

Room Tip: Rooms on the river side are quiet with lovely views. Be sure to check out the lounge/bar on the sec...

Our trip was to celebrate a special birthday, and what a great place to spend it. First impression of the room was a little basic even though it was a deluxe room but we soon warmed to the room especially the huge bathroom and spa bath. However the food was fantastic and the staff equally so, nothing was too much trouble and very very helpful when trying to get your head around the language! if you enjoy a drink the bar is stunning with a huge range of fantastic Icelandic beer and also spirits and again the bar staff were fantastic, the waffles for breakfast went down really well. Perfect situation for visiting the south of the island, the manager and owner were both around most days and were really helpful when planning trips and great company at dinner. All the staff were really keen to help with any queries, we would highly recommend anyone considering a visit to Iceland to spend at least one night at Hotel Ranga we stayed for 4 and wished we could have stayed a lot longer.

Stayed for 2 nights in Feb. Lovely hotel which has a real ranch feel to it. The restaurant in the hotel is fantastic but very expensive, but you can also eat in the upstairs bar from the room service menu if you want to save some cash. Rooms were nice & comfortable with big bathrooms and we were lucky that our room was right next to one of the outdoor hot tubs.

Unfortunately it was cloudy when we stayed here so we did not see any northern lights. However having being there I can imagine it to be really great place to see them if the conditions are right, just need the luck of the draw. The hotel is also well located for day trips, to the west there is the golden circle and to the east there are other well known waterfalls, volcanoes, national parks ,glaciers etc all of which are easily accessible by car and easy to find. So even if you don't see the lights there's still other good reasons to stay here.

First impressions you will think you are in the middle of nowhere, and you are, but give yourself five minutes in the hotel and you will not want to be anywhere else in Iceland. Like the other posts state this hotel is one for the memory box, well worth saving up for. We had a suite & it was worth the extra money, the Australian room.
On another note Iceland is a hidden treasure we never thought there would be so much to do. Yes it's expensive, but well worth every penny, cheaper airlines fly here now so reduces costs. You will need a car, maybe a 4x4 depending on when you're planning your stay.
We've been back a week now but keep looking at the hotel's website and have promised each other we will visit Iceland again, and it will has be Hotel Ranga. Now get your coat!!!

Room Tip: It's worth upgrading but you'll need to book well in advance

Everything about Hotel Ranga was beautiful - from its facilities, to toiletries, front desk and restaurant staff, the chef's talents and general surroundings.

The owner welcoming his guests in the restaurant was a nice touch.

Spent 4 nights at Hotel Ranga and thought it was excellent. The staff are extremely helpful, and always have time to talk to you. We stayed in room 42, one of the superior rooms facing south and overlooking the river, and the room was lovely. It was my birthday our second day, and housekeeping left a red rose in the room which was a lovely touch.

We ate in the restaurant every night, it is expensive, but so is everything else in Iceland, and the food was really excellent. Breakfast was also very good, plenty of choice, and good quality.

We saw the northern lights during our stay, the hotel staff promptly phoning us to wake us up when they appeared.

We would definitely come back here.

Room Tip: South facing room overlook the river and have lovely views, north facing rooms overlook the car park...
