“Perfect wedding venue”
Reviewed January 2, 2013

We held our wedding at Hotel Ranga on 12/12/12 and I can't thank everyone enough. From the rehearsal dinner in the private dining room, to support on the day, to organising the music, to the most amazing food, to organising hair and make up, to the canapes and hote chocolate, to the amazing wedding skyr cake, to the wedding dinner and disco...everything was perfect and went according to plan. I'd especially like to thank Hugrun, the wedding co-ordinator. For anyone thinking of Hotel Ranga as a wedding venue, I'd thoroughly recommend it, 1000%.

Room Tip: The antarctica suite is amazing!!!!!!

We stayed four nights in November in the hope of seeing the Northern Lights. Unfortunately it was to cloudy and we didn't see them. It snowed heavily our first night and the hotel needed to dig our car out so we could go for a drive which they did with no problems. It was quite windy which made getting out and walking around a little tricky. While the theme suites are very nicely decorated in the theme of the continent we represented we were disappointed that they didn't have a comfortable couch to sit on and the Japanese bath was quite a step up to get to. The hotel did look after us with a change of room however in hindsight I would just have chosen a deluxe room - though the Antartica suite looked fabulous. The food in the restaurant was very nice and the staff extremely helpful, the manager introduced himself which was a nice touch. Breakfast was nice and plenty to choose from. We took a super jeep tour and that was great.

We stayed at Hotel Ranga while out touring the Southern Coast of Iceland. Its a great hotel with nothing around it. Be prepared for a very remote location. However, the quality of food and service is excellent. We loved staying there

Room Tip: Would recommend room 0 if you have kids. It was a massive suite. Kids loved it.

We stayed at this hotel for 4 nights. I was in a double deluxe room and my daughter, son-in.law and grandchild in a suite. At first we thought the rooms were a bit on the expensive side but the jacuzzi in the bathroom made my double deluxe worth every cent! The suite was luxurious and lived up to expectations.

This is truly the first time in all of my years of travel that I have experienced 'consistency' in a hotel. This was across the board from the rooms, service, food and a well organised wake up call for when the Northern Lights are active.

I would recommend this hotel for anyone wanting to experience the Top 10 in Iceland, 6 of which are in fairly close proximity. It is an excellent location for watching the Northern Lights because there is very little light pollution to interfere with the spectacular light show that comes free!

Room Tip: Because of the layout of the hotel all rooms are fairly well removed from high traffic areas.

...well we have been twice now. Both times in December. Both times there were no Northern Lights, which was really the reason for our trip, but we had a fantastic time despite this.

I have just returned from a trip with my 12 year old daughter who loved it too. The hotel is set in beautiful isolation. If you step outside you can feel that you are the only people left in the world with miles of land stretching to the distant volcanos.

The hotel is very cozy and warm. The staff are super-helpful. We did not rent a car so travelled by bus from Reykjavik to Hella which took about 1.5 hours and cost about £20 for the two of us. The bus dropped us at Hella, but the bus driver can often be persuaded to take you to the hotel...I guess our driver was having a bad day. However, I called the hotel and they promised to send a taxi or find a way of getting us there while we waited at the gas station and stocked up on snacks for our room. We were delighted when Stella, one of the cheery staff, came to pick us up...the owner had asked her to do this...we didn't have to wait long and it was a lovely gesture.

The food is quite expensive but very good (entrees around £20). The mushroom soup was the best I have ever tasted. If you are with fussy kids, there are fantastic burgers and chicken and chips. The menus are all available on their website.

We absolutely loved the hot tubs - there are a few outside the rooms. It's a lovely feeling to run through the snow into the perpetually warm tubs, then gaze at the stars.

If you want to splash out, the master suites are amazing. We took a peak while they were being cleaned and the Africa room was our favourite...just incredible for a honeymoon or a special occasion.

I would advise booking your trips early because then the staff will let others know that you are taking the trip and you can cut costs by going with others. Our 5 hour excursion cost £120 per person, but it really was worth it.

However, if you want to be alone, this is no problem. We took an amazing jeep tour to Thorsmork, near to the volcano that nobody can pronounce! We saw ice caves and incredible scenery...then off to the black beach...a wild and unreal landscape where we saw the remains of a huge whale and a shipwrecked boat. We drove right along the beach, and over some crazy terrain (half the jeep on snowy dunes, half on icy lakes). It's a massively welcome break from the UK's manic health and safety rules. The rivers and water move daily so the road sometimes disappears and the driver has to navigate a new route. This happened to us and we got stuck in deep snow which was a little scary, but our smily driver assured us that he could always call a friend to haul us out. Luckily, he managed to dig us out...all part of the adventure!

The guides/drivers are incredibly flexible and friendly and are happy to stop whenever you like or to visit places you particularly want to see.

A word of warning...don't take a super-jeep trip if you are not reasonably fit. Just getting into the huge vehicle is quite a feat because they are so high. And our driver got us clambering over snowy rocks and through streams....it was great fun and not your everyday "here's the ice cave, get out take a photo, get back in" type of trip. Although I am sure the drivers would cater to the fitness levels of their passengers.

The previous year we went snowmobiling on a glacier and went to see the amazing geysers.

If you don't have a car and need to get to the airport early (we had a 9am departure), you will have to take a taxi which costs £220! If you let the desk know with enough time, they can let other guests in the same situation know and you can share the taxi, which, thankfully, we were able to do.

I love this hotel...it is a real get away from it all kind of place...another World.

Room Tip: Request a room near to a hot tub (if you like hot tubs of course!) Buy a couple of bottles of win...

We stayed here one night as part of our first trip to iceland and wished we had booked at least another night.

We stayed in one of their standard rooms very nice but exactly what you would expect from a resort hotel, say, in the states. Otherwise the place has nordic log-cabin feel.

Restaurant is good with a interesting set of dishes using Icelandic ingredients, the breakfast was also particularly good.

Room Tip: I would book either a standard room at either end of the building (furthest away from the restaurant...

great hotel to stay at, we really enjoyed its quiet isolation. It's location is great to visit sights to the east and the Golden Circle to the north during the day. The staff were lovely and provided excellent service. The restaurant is excellent, serving a delicious dinner and very good breakfasts.
