“Great Place to Stay”
Reviewed July 28, 2011

This is a cozy hotel with decent amenities. The rooms are spacious and clean and provide excellent views of the Iceland terrain. It's definitely in the middle of nowhere and about a ten minute drive from the town of Hella, which is also in the middle of nowhere, but that was one of the things we really enjoyed about the place. There are a few restaurants nearby, but none worth recommending, and we didn't eat at the hotel for any meals other than the free breakfast. The breakfast did have a nice variety of items and we were pleasantly surprised when it was included in our room rate. The view from the dining room is spectacular!

I whole-heartedly recommend this hotel if you're looking to stay out in the country or want to do any excursions on the South East coast. It was a long drive (3-4 hours) from this hotel to the Jokulsarlon Lagoon (which you HAVE to do) so I'm glad we were staying in Hella instead of Reykjavik since it cut an hour off the drive. The drive wasn't too bad to the other sites like Geysir, Thingvellir, and Gulfoss (1 hour). The countryside is gorgeous, so just plan to enjoy the scenery along the way to each site.

The hotel staff was kind of hit or miss, but I think the language barrier may have added to some of our confusing conversations. They did speak English, but didn't always completely understand what we were asking, which wasn't a big deal. Overall, they tried to be helpful and gave us great directions to nearby sites. They also helped coordinate getting our luggage when it was delayed from our flight. As a weird side note about delayed luggage and the hotel's location, the airlines (IcelandAir) put it on the public bus and dropped it off at the gas station in Hella for us to pick up.

If we ever go back to Iceland, we will definitely stay at this hotel.

Hotel Ranga was our 2nd stop on our week long trip to Iceland. It's a wonderfully rustic hotel in the heart of south Iceland. We stayed in a standard room and it was perfect. I read other reviews that said it was a bit on the small side but we found it to be just fine - even with our our huge suitcases!

The restaurant is outstanding. Breakfast provided a wide variety of icelandic items (lots of fish) as well as American style items (eggs, bacon, etc). We thoroughly enjoyed dinner as well. The wait staff was friendly & attentive & informative, especially when we inquired about the smoked puffin. Too our surprise, it was quite tasty!

Finally, the close proximity to the south coast Iceland can't be beat. A 30 min drive to the Westman Islands ferry, 1 hour drive to Skogar & beyond. Absolutely breathtaking scenery!

For all your Iceland vacationers, I urge you to stay & relax at Hotel Ranga. You won't be disappointed!

We were traveling Iceland on a budget in October 2010, I thought we couldn't afford this place and wanted to stay here really badly. I found an amazing rate online that we couldn't pass up. We stayed here for one evening and this is where my boyfriend proposed. We had a wonderful evening, I had one of the best meals I've ever had in my entire life, we ended up chatting with the bartender about all the different alcohols they serve, he was super nice and super knowledgeable about them. The hot tub was great, I wish they had more, there were mostly couples there and its kinda awkward to jump in on someone's romantic evening. The view was great, I wish we could have seen the northern lights, I also wish we had stayed a second night here, it was just amazing.

Te hotel is excellent, staff are extremely friendly. Beds and pillows are very comfortable and the courtains can make your bedroom dark even in the summer.

The hot tube is great! We had lovely time there, drinking wine and watching the sunset. I think must be amazing watch the northern lights from there as well.

The restaurant is the best of the surroundings, we loved the salmon with champagne and white chocolate, surprisingly fabulous!

Do not think of staying anywhere else in southeast of Iceland, you won't regret.

Room Tip: The rooms that has a view for the landscape are better, they are near the hot tubes, the rooms that...

We stayed two nights and splurged on the "deluxe" 7 Continent rooms. As I understand this wing was constructed a few years ago for a visit by the Rockefeller family. The rooms were fabulous, unique, and large (we saw the "standard" rooms and they were cozy.

This hotel deserves its 4- or 5-star rating. It is in a beautiful setting and the perfect location for many outdoor activities. Service was excellent.

We ate two dinners and they were great. Breakfast was the usual large spread of continental fare.

Pricey but we judged it "good value" for Iceland. We stayed at 2 other noted "resorts" in Iceland and this was way better.

We went to Iceland for my boyfriends special birthday in Feb this year. We were so lucky, there was so much snow and -16 most days. It was amazing. We absolutely loved it. I paid for the upgrade to the posh Royal suite, it wasn't cheap but it was worth every penny. The room was amazing, actually beyond amazing.
We had a hire jeep through our package and did alot of travelling about, Iceland was a beautiful yet sometimes bleek landscape similar to that of the moon. It was the best time of my life. Hotel Ranga was pure luxury in the middle of nowhere giving a perfect view of the very limited Northern lights. Outside hot tubs while sitting in the snow / blizzard, amazing staff and a lovely restaurant all over looking a salmon river.
If I had one thing they could improve I would say the dinner, yes its lovely and I love a bit of posh food but after a day or two you start to crave something simple.....I would have loved a nice bit of fish grilled but it was all in strawberry and chocolate sauce. That said, this really was the best weekend of my life. I will definately be back.

Room Tip: pay the upgrade for the Royal Suite
