Hotel staff was extremely helpful. We were rescued by them as we went to the wrong road and our car were stuck in the thick snow. They helped to pull out our vehicle and led us to the hotel with no extra charges. In addition, we were delighted to see out rooms as the facilities are modern with a backdoor which gave us great access to see the northern lights. We were the only group staying in the hotel that night and were blessed to have to chance to witness northern lights and shooting stars!!!

Stayed three nights in December 2013 during coldest weather for some time (-20 one night). Upstairs North facing room (as requested) was accessed by outside stairs and was warm and comfortable but needed to get outside wear on to go back into the hotel. The owner Gunnar and his family were very friendly and helpful and we were woken around 1.00 am on our first night to view Northern lights. Gunnar took amazing photos of us with n lights in background which we will treasure forever.
Plenty of choice for breakfast and the two evening meals we had were lovely if a little pricey compared with home cooking in UK. Tea and coffee were freely available at any time and we spent some time in the cosy upstairs lounge.
The scenery around the hotel was amazing and we were lucky to have clear, sunny weather during our stay which, coupled with the recent snow, made for plenty of picture postcard scenes.
We were so glad we got out of Reykjavik and used this lovely hotel as a base to visit the wonderful South Iceland area.

Room Tip: Upstairs North facing rooms are best placed to view Northern lights.

We stayed for a few nights at Hotel Laekur with two other couples in September 2013. We had a great stay. The family who owns the hotel are very friendly and helpful. We had an early start one morning to get to our snowmobile ride and they were willing to put out a light breakfast for us since we would miss the regular breakfast time. The rooms are sparse, but very bright and clean. Very well located near sites, but off the main road for quiet.

Seven of us spent one night at Hotel Laekur on our way South. We arrived late after having dinner at Hotel Ranga. Our rooms were very clean and the beds were comfortable. They have a great living room area upstairs where we hung out and had some drinks for a couple of hours. The breakfast was good. Overall we had a very pleasant stay.

We rented 3 rooms here for 2 nights. Rooms are not luxurious but they have everything you need in them- a table, chairs, hair dryer, night lamps. They have an Ikea-like feel furnishing wise. Each room had a door to the outside, motel style. They also had indoor access to the hallway and dining area- as well as a really cool loft common area with a tv, books, games, guitar and more. Breakfast offererings included milk, juice, coffee, tea, home made breads and cakes, cereal, oatmeal, meats, cheeses, fruits and hard boiled eggs. The front desk is unmanned at night- however, there is a phone and number to call to ask the next door owner for anything you may need. The views are beautiful and the staff is so helpful. They were having concrete poured while we were there for a hot tub they will be installing.

Hotel Laekur is located 11km off the ring road no. 1 which implies by nature it is a dark site. This is an ideal condition for observing Aurora Borealis. You only need a clear night and an active Sun to have a good show of the natural wonder. While you don’t have much control over the nature, Hotel Laekur offers you an excellent environment ready for show. My family spent two nights at the hotel in early November 2013. Both nights were very fruitful because our primary objective of the trip to Iceland was for Northern Lights. Solar Cycle 24 has gone through its peak and the Sun’s activity is probably diminishing gradually. Those who are interested may wish to check the NOAA web for more information. We saw the “breakup” phenomenon of Aurora Borealis in the first evening and a magnificent display of different shapes and combinations of color in the following evening (after midnight actually). We spent four hours observing, photographing, and most importantly enjoying ourselves in the first evening and another 3 hours in the following. For all these, we were most grateful to the hotel host who kindly gave us alerts for Northern Lights. To us, it’s unforgettable experience. If it so happens you are looking for a suitable site for Northern Lights in southern Iceland we would recommend this one to you wholeheartedly.

Room Tip: Rooms facing north are best for Northern Lights
