We stayed 2 nights at Hella, first night we ate at Arthus where many local come, and the atmosphere was nice, the second night we ate at Kannslarinn, the soup was so so but the main courses much better than in Arthus, but theplace is cold and not enough light so after the good dinner we went for coffee and cake back to Arthus.

After the glacier walk finishes at 3 pm, no place will give you food except from some cafe with snacks.
This place run by a pleasant gentleman serves cooked food till 5 pm.
We had fish ( best in iceland ), steak, burgers and a vegetarian dish too.
Food was simply superb and so was the attitude and friendliness.

Hella is a very small town, with not much in the way of dining choices. We'd been staying at the Hotel Ranga, which has terrific food, but wanted to try a local place, so we stopped at Kannslarinn, right on the main road. There were absolutely no tourists there, only towns people, and it's clear that this is a local gathering place. The decor is plain, the atmosphere is more like a Denny's than fine dining, and the menu was a little bit of everything. I asked the owner what he'd recommend, and he said the fish and chips.

What I got was the most incredibly fresh haddock, in a delicate crust of batter. Tender, tasty -- the best I've had anywhere!

I would, however, steer away from the vienna schnitzel, which was too salty and not pounded thin enough. I suspect it's on the menu just for German tourists. But do come in and give the fish and chips a try!
