“Absolutely Wonderful!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 7, 2010

Our family stayed here in a small cottage for 3 nights on our drive around Iceland. It was brand new and lovely and the surrounding countryside was so pretty. It was a bit crowded at breakfast due do a horse flu outbreak that had left some Swiss guets without a place to stay and they were doing their best to accommodate them. I can't fault them for that at all.

Our kids were able to go on a horse ride and this was a great location for checking out the south coast of Iceland. I especially liked it because it was so quiet at night and just a generally peaceful place.

5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 30, 2009

On our way back to the states from Europe, we stayed at Hestheimar for 3 nights in July with our 2 and 6 year old girls. We rented a car at the airport and drove approx 2.5 hours southeast. It was a great way to avoid the stress of staying at a hotel in Reykjavik and going to the larger but more touristy horse facilities.

It's a family owned horse farm with a wonderfully helpful staff. We booked the apartment next to the stables which has a full kitchen and a separate bedroom. On the evening we arrived we had been traveling for most of the day and it happened to be our anniversary which we had not had time to celebrate. Having mentioned this to them in advance and asked if they could help, they packed a picnic basket with fresh baked bread for us so we could have a late evening picnic under the 'setting' Iceland sun. A girl who worked on the farm was nice enough to babysit our girls while they slept. This definitely was a great start to our stay which we won't soon forget.

Our girls love horses, and since they have over 100 of them there were plenty of them around. Including 2 foals which showed up at dinner time with their mothers each night. Our 6 year old went for several rides with the girls who work there and had an amazing time. These horses are very docile but she also learned to hold on properly which is important just in case. Us parents had a great time riding these beautiful horses out in the countryside as well. Our 2 year old was able to ride as well, (though with a little more help of course) and we've never seen her so happy and quiet at the same time. It was a great way for us beginner riders to learn and they were more than happy to teach us.

Each morning they serve a really nice breakfast at the main house and advise their guests on where to go and what to do each day. And every evening they have a fantastic home made three course dinner. Being vegetarian we were very impressed that they were more than happy to accommodate and all the food was excellent.

Hestheimar is not too far of a drive from Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss which are both must see waterfalls. In the other direction are the geysers and Gullfoss which are easy day trips.

As long as you understand that this is an active horse farm and you're out in the countryside you won't be disappointed. They are a wonderful family and everyone is so helpful, even the 6 year old son who was eager to show our girls where the toys were. Definitely the way to go if you want to experience the countryside of Iceland and ride Icelandic horses.
