I would stay here again in a heartbeat; within easy walking distance to the Lincoln Museum and Library, State Capital Building (practically across the street), Old State Capital, Lincoln's Home and the Amtrak station. The staff were very pleasant and accommodating, even to the point of getting us map-quest directions to the Botanical Gardens.
The hotel is styled In the 70's Retro which we thought quite charming and for the most part, comfortable. The suites were very clean, the beds and pillows as good as our own. The heat/air was controlled by individual thermostats in the sitting room and the bedroom. Robes in the bathroom along with plenty of towels and toiletries rounded out the experience. This hotel is definitely on our list of do-overs!!

Room Tip: We were on the 3rd floor facing the Capital Building; beautiful view after dark! No noise and very quiet.

We recently stayed at the State House Inn in Springfield, and are very glad we did.

Here are the positives:
*Very well done refurbishment preserving the 60s look and feel - very Mad Men lobby is just the start
*Comfy room!!!! Comfy bed, lots of hot water, pleasant feel, well laid out - modernist without feeling stark
*Everything very clean and quiet
*Staff helpful and cheerful, full of good advice about the area. A great big busload of high school athletes was staying in the hotel, and the staff also made sure the kids behaved and stayed quiet - thus figuring out something that seems beyond the grasp of so many other hotels
*Superb location - one block from the Illinois Statehouse itself, one of the most beautiful in the country (don't miss it) and near the great sites - the Lincoln Library and Museum, the historic original statehouse (where the House Divided speech was given), the Lincoln Home, and of course restaurants and watering holes (it is a legislative town, after all)
*Free parking on the hotel's own lot

Negatives:
None! We really liked this hotel and will stay here the next time we pass through this part of the country.

Extra tip about visiting Springfield: bring plenty of change for the parking meters

Traveled to Springfield for a overnight before heading on to St. Louis to visit the Lincoln Museum and the Frank Lloyd Wright Dana-Thomas house (both great). Wanted a hotel that allowed us to walk to restaurants, etc. to help get us out of the car from our road trip. Hotel lobby is very well remodeled and love the terrazzo floors. Lobby, lounge, etc. very nice. Was on the 6th floor - room was clean and well appointed (although the HON desk chairs are a bit lame). Bed frames are a bit beat up, but the mattresses were very comfy and slept well. Will note that this hotel was built in the early '60s, so rooms are smaller than today's chains (we had two doubles for us and our son). Just be aware; if you ever stay in NYC though, this room is larger than most of those! My two beefs - the pillows are literally sandbags. Ug. Not soft or head-conforming at all. And the shower head is from the remodel from over 10+ years ago; ok, but not great. Breakfast was typical hotel, but I do appreciate the make-your-own waffle irons. Parking was easy, Springfield is very walkable, and I love the vibe of the hotel (I will note the carpet, etc. is newer than the shower head!). They could also improve the bazillion little pieces of paper they give you upon check-in/check-out. They could use some improvement from a designer! But overall, a unique property we'd definitely return to.

Our family decided to take part of our Spring Break in Springfield as a historical trip.We picked The State House Inn since it was in the heart of Springfield right next to the Capital. So the Location is excellent. The price was good about $105/nite. The parking was fine and lobby clean. The Front Desk was very accomdating and provide prompt service. We had booked a Suite and expected a bigger room.

Although suite was alittle bigger, we were very disappointed. First of all, beware the Sofa sleeper is nothing more than a leather couch (no arm rests) that folds in half. This was not big enough for my kids (7 - 10). The small refrig had several bangs in it and all the walls had greasing stains from hands and ?. The bathroom was clean and the highlight. The King bed was lumpy with its sheets. We were so disappointed that had considered moving to another hotel. However we moved to a regular two bed room and made the best of it. The double bed rooms are small and had full beds (no queens). It was ok. TVs were old and not great.

The highlight of the stay was the full breakfast in the morning (part of the room charge) was great. Eggs, Bacon/Sausage, coffee, etc. Kids were able to make their own waffles. Beware their is no restaurant in the hotel only a bar/lounge area.

Overall The State House Inn is an average hotel that appears that it was office building converted into a hotel. Advantages: Walking distance to everything. Full Breakfest, Staff very nice and Bathrooms clean. Disadvantages: Small rooms, Suite are not great, Sofa sleeper is small hard couch. No restaurant in hotel.

Please note, we had friends staying at Abraham Lincoln hotel. It was modern and great. Higher price per night ($130) but the rooms were palaces compared to the State House.

Room Tip: Suites are bigger however the pull out Sofa with just folds out was hard and very small. Refrigerator ok. Bathrooms are good and clean.

I just wanted to make a few comments about this Guest's comments.
First, the Hotel is the youngest building in Springfield to be Historically designated. The "International Style" of Architecture embraced the new technologies of Concrete, Steel & Glass. It is NOT a converted Office building.
Our Suites have a separate bedroom with a locking solid core door. The Living Area has a workstation, small refrigerator, Futon and other pieces of furniture. I don't know what this guest expected for sleeping arrangements but if they needed beds for 4 people they probably should have asked. Lots of "Suites" won't accommodate two kids and two adults.
Our beds are not "Lumpy" and we are a 3 star hotel; 3 star hotels do not have restaurants. Comparing us to a 300+ room 4 star hotel is like comparing apples to oranges. The "Other Hotel" also doesn't supply a full hot breakfast which, for 2 adults & two children would cost upwards of $30. Add that to the rate plus they also charge for parking and you have about a 50% difference in cost.
If you want a 4 star hotel with 4 star prices then that's what you should choose. For a 3 star hotel we deliver far more amenities and "Free Stuff" than anybody else in Springfield. Oh, and try streaming high definition video from "The other hotel's" internet. Good luck. We are the only hotel with free truly high speed internet.
I'm glad this guest appreciated the free food; they didn't mention the host of other complimentary amenities we provide but we are by far the best value in just about any hotel you can find anywhere. That's why we have hundreds of 4 and 5 star reviews.

Took our three grand children to see all the Lincoln venues in Springfield. Had a suite with a rollaway bed and it worked out fine. Free breakfast was excellent. Staff has been unfailingly nice on every one of our three visit. I recommend the State House Inn anyone visiting Springfield, Ill.
