I grew up a couple blocks away from Bernie and Betty's, so I decided to take a trip down memory lane and take my family there for pizza. The place is the same as it's always been. Not full of pretense or panache--just a simple pizza place on par with most small town restaurants. They've jumped on the recent video gambling expansion trend and have a game room--which is a turn off for my family, but the pizza was still good--thin crust, sweet sauce. A decent change of pace, but you'd feel better about eating it if you did a carry out order.

This restaurant has been in operation for more than 40 years. The owners have changed but the recipes are still the same; good stuff. Originally tucked away behind a gas station, it now has a prominent corner with good parking. Our group of seven descended on a Wednesday evening, normal a so-so time. This evening, they were very busy but the two waitresses handled the crowd well. Six ordered pizza, their specialty, and one ordered spaghetti.
The tin crust pizza looked every bit like what you might expect: cheese, meat, etc with a shine to make it all the more appetizing. Our 12 inch was slightly burnt on the bottom, indicating they left it in the oven about a minute too long. Ours was light on the sausage; it could have had more but they did put extra cheese, at no extra charge. We have always felt that whether pizza is cut in wedges or squares, each piece should have some meat on it.
Overall, everybody enjoyed the evening. At least two of our group had never been there before. As it stands, we all agreed that it was worth a return trip.

The atmosphere is like a 70's living room, there were about a dozen people there including children running around and everyone was family and arguing. It felt like being in someones dysfunctional house. The service was quick, the food was mediocre.

Best thin crust pizza in Springfield, maybe Illinois. Good range of toppings... the tomatos are fresh. Generally pick-up and have a beer while waiting, the bartender/manager is great.

If I had to choose the best pizza in town, I'd choose this place. Great thin crust made to order with generous portions of ingredients and decent prices. The location isn't great and the atmosphere lacks, but if you're in the mood for a great slice of "za," bring your friends and make your own fun!
