the taxpayers pay for this mansion for the governor to live in. The governors have been from Chicago and apparently don't care for it. But it is beautiful.

Even though our past and present governors travel back and forth to Chicago (at taxpayer expense) to live, the Executive Mansion is a very nice, historic, well-maintained, big home that should be lived in. The tour (not given every day so get a schedule before traveling here) is especially pretty at Christmas when local organizations decorate trees which are displayed on all the floors and in each room. The docents are knowledgable and interesting. Worth your time when in the Springfield area seeing other sites, such as Lincoln's Home and the Abraham Lincoln Presidential Library and Museum.

I was fortunate to also have been invited to a function there and have a great dinner in the mansion and a wonderful tour. The governor may not actually use it but it is a building that is worth seeing especially if you get a great tour guide who can tell you interesting tidbits too. Phyllis was our tour guide and she is outstanding. I enjoyed looking at the furniture and the plates etc. It has a beautiful spiral staircase and also enjoyed the story of the workman back in the 70's who was working in the attic and feet fell through the plaster and another workman saved him by pulling him up by his hair...he has a bald spot now. The landscaping and flowers are well tended and add beauty to the outside. Only open on certain days during different seasons so you will want to check your time of year and the hours open then. If you need parking it is on street only but not hard to find. If you are staying downtown you can just walk a few blocks as is right on a main street of S. Fifth.

I'm not exactly sure when they built this place, but it goes back to the 19th Century. A large, spacious old mansion built for Illinois' Governors. However, the facility is frequently used for other purposes, including civic organizations, wedding receptions of various state officials, etc. The building gets renovated regularly, so it's in surprisingly good condition for its age. Elegant antique furnishings throughout the mansion. Beautiful winding staircase. A large banquet facility with a stage for speakers and presentations. The dining staff is quite competent, and meals served there are very tasty and always surprising to your palette. The grounds are worth walking through. Lovely flower gardens, a nice, relaxing patio area, a vegetable garden out beside the mansion. Most governors stay here during their term of office. Blagojevich blew it off and preferred to commute back and forth to Chicago every evening (at taxpayers' expense), but most of the rest of the governors make this their home while they're in office. You can't just waltz in unannounced, but if you have the opportunity to see this elegant place, by all means do so. Bring your camera.
