If you live within driving distance (or like us, had to drive two days to get there), you must check out the Lincoln Museum and Library in Springfield, Illinois. This trip started as a Road trip, and we left amazed at everything there was to do in Springfield--the museum being one of the top 10. VERY, VERY interactive and a place for kids especially to get a handle on the life and times of Lincoln, from artifacts, to recreations, to wax family members...a great little exhibit called Mary's Attic allows little ones(and not so little ones, my husband loved it) to try games and clothes of the period. There is a huge room with a full-sized screen that allows you to view the Civil War in eight minutes...very memorable. Take your time, but when you are done, go see the Lincoln Monument not far away. Read "Stealing Lincoln's Body" by Craoughwell before you go, you will get so much out of the splendor of Springfield.
