My personal opinion because the ISM has so much more on the timeline of Illinois geography/topography/botany/etc. Displays were vivid. Tons of information. Recommend any farmer pass thru the Changes exhibit to better understand their land. I saw jewelry in the gift shop that i've never seen anywhere else. Beautiful. The building is a trip, too. Love the stainless steel and glass everywhere. The elevator is straight out of a Russian subway.

“A zillion things you didn't know about Illinois”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 6, 2013

I and a friend were in Springfield to attend an event and had some time to kill, so we checked out the Illinois State Museum. The staff (Jan) was wonderful and the exhibits were extremely interesting. We especially enjoyed the exhibits showing the natural history of Illinois. Who knew??

“Great Find”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 18, 2013

Many interesting exhibits that will appeal to both adults and children. The breadth of the museum, ranging from geologic history to native Americans to the 19th & 20th centuries has something for almost everyone. I had lived in Illinois for over 30 years and still learned many new and fascinating things about it. The staff is very friendly and helpful. The museum shop is worth a trip by itself for some unique gift ideas.

“Free museum for the whole family”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed February 7, 2013

Though the museum is modest in size, it's free, well structured, and suitable for all ages. We took our PhD physicist son and his 17 month old daughter. Spent about 1.5 hours in the exhibits and in the children's activity center. There was much to show and "talk" about with the child. We adults found the exhibits informative and entertaining. However, the children's center was the biggest hit. Lots of things for children to get their hands on, make noise and have some fun. I'd highly recommend this site for a break from the excellent historical sites around town.
