“Sorry...This place don't cut it.”
1 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 2, 2011

This place has two ratings on TripAdvisor. The first is 12/211? and the second is 64/211. Diners would be advised that the second rating is too high. We went on Fri. night and based on reviews I thought I had found something special. Wrong! Very limited choice of foods served in un-appetizing manner in a room no decor. I have nothing positive to say about this place. At $10.47 a person for what was offered is a waste of time and money.

“Deliciously delectable - GREAT food!”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed May 12, 2011

This restaurant was beyond our expectations, both for quality of food, and for service. We had the vegetarian buffet on Saturday evening. AMAZING!! The atmosphere was unique, and open. The owners were very kind and friendly.

We truly enjoyed this meal, as part of our Lincolnland experience!

“Nice change of pace”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 12, 2010

A friend of my son's recommended this place as a good lunch stop as we headed out on a trip. It's in the downtown area, which was not inconvenient for us as we needed to get from I55 to a destination on the west side of Springfield.
The building it's in is a converted old food factory, stone walls and timbers, so the atmosphere is very nice. There are several other restaurants, and it all appears to be very well done. Parking might be tight at a busy time, but it looks like street parking is available.
It's mostly a do-it-yourself buffet, so don't expect to be hovered over. Everything is kept clean and picked up.
The food is Middle East / Mediterranean, nicely prepared. The pitas could have been a little softer, and the gyros meat could have spent less time in the tray, but the hummus was delicious and the salads were fresh and authentic. There were lots of tasty side items and an ice cream bar.
We had heard good things about the baclava, but didn't see it on the menu. As I paid my bill, the manager gave me a free sample. Very good.
Apparently you need to ask about things on your first visit, because this place seems to be popular with the locals who already know the ropes.

“Great food and fantastic owners”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed April 19, 2010

We found this little gem through internet research. Open only for lunch and weekend buffets. The atmosphere is charming down home comfortable. We were greeted at the door by the nice lady who owns it and looked after by her husband. The Mediterranean/Middle Eastern buffet is extensive and full of surprises. They will explain anything you don't understand, but for us it was all delicious.

Start off with the Greek salad, and mix in your own selection of olives, feta and peppers. Two soups are available, and the lentil was fantastic. There's bowls of hummus and fol with pitas available for dipping. Followup with rice and yummy bean stew, and herbed chicken, stewed and braised to tender perfection. Ribs and lots of other items were also available.

For dessert there is scrumptious baklava, perfect with a bowl of soft serve ice cream.

We are always looking for these locally owned cultural gems when we travel and we so happy to have experienced the Holy Land Diner.
