I have lived in Illinois all my life...over 60 years...and never visited Springfield or the State Capitol. The Capitol is absolutely gorgeous. Every inch of the building that we visited could compete with the best of the best regarding interior design and restoration. Truly impressive!

As a transplanted Illinoisan, I was pleasantly surprised by the capitol building. Its statuary, paintings and appointments tell a story. Oddly, the Native Americans are al over the capitol building in paintings and bas-reliefs with little irony regarding the theft of their land and the horrible treatment they got from the European settlers.

This state capitol is up there with the best. Columbus Day kept us from seeing the upper floors, including the Senate and House Chambers. That was our only disappointment. We were reushed so missed out on the tour and that was our mistake. Go if you are in the area.

If you stop at the current capitol, you really need to take the guided tour. It only lasts about a half hour, but it takes you through the various parts of the capitol and explains some of the statues and pictures. The ceilings in the various chambers are incredible works of art. Very good tour and well worth your time.

This is a cool place. It's really beautiful at night. If you stay at the Hilton the view of the capitol is awesome. On the Fourth of July the city has fireworks right in front of the capitol. It's very cool. Never been inside but I'm sure it's neat.
