Tours are 7 days a week and are free. We arrived during the week when they have tours every half hour 8 AM to 4 PM. On the weekends they are on the hour 9 AM to 3 PM. Go the information desk on the first floor for tour information. Having visited many capitols, they are lovely and unique in their own way. The Illinois capitol is no exception. The dome is silver (zinc plated) & you can see it from almost anywhere in the city. Inside the dome is stained glass in the inner dome. The capitol took 20 years to complete.

The tour guide did a nice job. You will hear lots about the history of Illinois and President Lincoln also. A dedication was being held for the Illinois Firefighters Memorial, while we were in the capitol area.

Make sure to also tour the Old State Capitol while you are in town.

Any history buff or Illinois resident should take the time to visit the new Lincoln Museum in Springfield, as well as the tomb, his home and New Salem. Add the Old State Capitol, LIncoln's law offices, the train station and you have a good weekend trip. It's good for children and adults. Visit New Salem's website for information on any special activities that may be occurring.

BIG impressive building, where, supposedly, "it all happens". It all in Illinois politics anyway. If you’re in town doing the touristy stuff, got to stop in for one of the free tours. Worth seeing.

We took the tour again this year and it's funny how many details you forget. It's quite oppulent (as is every state capitol we've seen) and, as much as I'd like to see our current General Assembly housed in a warehouse under fluorescent lights, our capitol is truly remarkable and beautiful.

Both the grounds and the building are beautiful. It really stands out in the city, which is very (surprisingly) small!
