One of the best State capitol buildings. The dome is beautiful. Visit one of the law makers in chambers. (make sure to make an appointment ahead of time.)

Have your picture taken out front with the statue of Abe. Enjoy a sit a spell overlooking the fountains. Once inside admire the beauty of the surroundings, the buzz of the political activity, the beautiful house and senate chambers, and linger to look at the artwork.

From the outside the Illinois State Capitol is an absolute sight of grandeur. The inside as well is so heavily laden with marble, rich paintings, and bronze statues, you might think this is a home of one of the wealthiest French aristocrats. The ceilings are almost dripping with gold and gilded wood accents and moldings and even the doors to the common restroom are larger than life. With that being said, you can see that the highlight of this attraction goes to the architecture. The tours that are given here are short and dry and although you are given unprecedented access to most of the facilities including the senate balcony and several other rooms, the place usually doesn't have any actual governmental working being done. The governor is always somewhere else and not in his office and the other groups of representatives are not usually in session. So after you walk the halls a few times, the place gets kind of boring. After all, this isn't a museum and information is hard to come by. My only suggestion to add a little action and bustle to your trip, is to look at the schedule when some of the governmental groups meet and sit it on some of their meetings to see how government works. Otherwise it is free and worth checking out for a few minutes.

When in Springfield, if there is one thing that you should see, it's the State Capital Building. My husband and I were there and couldn't get in because it was after 4 p.m., but thankfully we returned the next day and I'm so glad we did. The interior of this building is phenominal!! There is so much detail in the architecture, I spent the majority of the time looking "up"! The dome from the interior, the ceilings in the chambers.. everywhere you look, and when you consider the time it was built, it blew me away. And to actually be in the rooms where major government decisions are made, be it bad or good, made it a lot more real to me. Here's a little tip on visiting Springfield....if you go to the Springfield Visitor and Convention Center on 7th Street near Jefferson, they will give you a FREE PARKING PASS to use for the duration of your trip at any of the 2 to 5 hours meters!! Great town...lots to do for free....easy to get around.
