Owner description: Painstakingly rebuilt after being disassembled in the 1960s, this Greek Revival masterpiece saw Lincoln serve as a lawyer and legislator. In 1858, Lincoln delivered his landmark "House Divided" speech in the Capitol's Representatives Hall.

I work in an architecture firm, so I'm always interested in older buildings. The old State Capitol is very well preserved. You could really imagine Abraham Lincoln walking through the building. Its location near Lincoln's former law office is convenient also. You can visit both in one afternoon.

While most of this building is a reproduction, it does show how things were done "back in the day."

I love old (site, house, anything ) history, so this was a must see! Again, ABSOLUTELY worth the visit, considering it is free admission (of course there is a donation box I encourage all to give appropriately – but not sure if you’ve tried any of the Chicago attractions, but they are simply out-of-touch for a family vacation/sightseeing tour, so give to these folks and you’ll feel good you did). Fairly moving experience seeing the history. Funny story though, through none of the tour guides little speeches, etc., did anyone ever ‘remember’ to tell us the little known fact that the ‘old’ capitol building was actually, piece-by-piece dissembled, numbered, an underground foundation and parking garage dug, and the reassembled all in the span of about 3 years, during the 1960’s. Still, worth the look if you’re in town.

1 Old Capitol Plaza open daily 9 - 5 PM. Take the 30 minutes tour! You will be glad you did.
Tour is by donations.

We learned about the Old State Capitol when we toured the present Capitol.

We parked underground, very near the Old State Capitol. 75 cents for every 30 minutes. Our guide was a nice young man that gave a very informative tour. Across the street is his law office - the Lincoln Herndon Law Office State Historic Site.

This was the seat of state government from 1839 to 1876. Lincoln had visited here many times as a lawyer and a polictician. This is where he gave his famous "House Divided" speech in 1858. He also used the governor's rooms as his headquarters for his 1860 presidential campgain. We saw the room that in May of 1865, his body layed in state, 75,000 came but 25,000 could not get in.
