While staying at Hotel Hamar for a night, we visited the Settlement Centre and decided to try their restaurant for dinner (after seeing the prices and almost eerily empty restaurnat at Hotel Hamar!). This is obviously the place of choice for visitors to Borgarnes as the restaurant was full. Good menu selections with local ingredients, nicely presented, attentive service. My husband had the fish of the day (Tusk), while I had the lamb. The fish was excellent, however the lamb was tough and my meal was room temperature. It must have been prepared first and waited for the fish to be done, as that dish was piping hot.

A bit later I noticed the fish dish coming out to a diner at the next table .... the portion size was half of what my husband received. Shortly after they changed the chalkboard sign, removing Tusk and replacing it with Wolffish as the fish of the day. Perhaps they ran out?

Overall not a bad restaurant, and probably the best choice in small Borgarnes, but by comparison of our 6 days in Iceland it ranked at the bottom of some pretty outstanding (and fairly reasonably priced) restaurants.

“Wonderful meal”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

The food here is excellent; stopped in after getting a recommendation from fellow travellers at a hostel in north Iceland. It's certainly not cheap, but offers excellent value, given the quality of the meal.

“Fascinating exhibition and great food and coffee too”
Reviewed August 12, 2012

This is a really interesting place to visit for an introduction to the history of settlement in Iceland and to get some background details about Egils saga. There is also a gift shop attached which has a good range of souvenirs and upstairs is a great cafe/restaurant. The cakes and coffee served are wonderful and the food itself was very good. I had the meat special - horse, which was not tough at all as horse can sometimes be. The staff were very friendly and there is a free wifi in the cafe/restaurant - just ask for the password.

Other trip advisors led us to this restaurant and we were very pleased. Everything is very fresh and very well prepared. Another plus is the reasonable prices.
