Owner description: Offering a wealth of information, the Settlement Center provides a wonderful insight into Iceland’s history. It also gives you the chance to put your visit into the context of the country’s past. It also houses a cozy licensed restaurant, a café and a souvenir shop. The Center consists of three buildings, the warehouse, the merchant house and the reception hall. The exhibitions recreate the fascinating drama of the sagas and the birth of this island nation. They also bring to life one of Iceland’s most important cultural treasures, Egils Saga. There are two entertaining and educational exhibitions at the Settlement Center. While one tells the story of the first settlers, the other reveals the story of Iceland’s most important saga – Egils Saga. Egill Skalla-Grimson was a famous Viking and poet, and his saga is closely linked to the settlement period, as his father was one of the first settlers.

we wanted to have a meal and trip adviser mention 'the settlement centre' was good hence we were here. The resturant was spacious and pretty build by wooden planks towards the rocks as we were seated at the inner part of the resturant. Food was good, service was great. Very friendly staff. Best part was that there is a gift shop to shop after a meal as it was drizzling outside.

Great place to visit while in Borgarnes. The exhibits are interesting. The gift shop has many wonderful items for sale. The meal at the restaurant was very tasty and presented attractively. A must see place in Borgarnes.

Stopped off for morning coffee on day trip. Good fresh food, very friendly service and discovered two audio guided exhibitions to explore. We were pushed for time so chose the 30 minute one on Egil's Saga which was entertaining and just scarey enough to tell the story! Best gift shop we saw on our travels. Lots of nice craft-based gifts and again, staff in the shop were friendly and helpful. We liked it so much we stopped again on the return trip and had dinner. We weren't disappointed - lobster pasta was fabulous. Free wifi was an added bonus.

This was an unexpected surprise. We did the audio tour of both sides of the center and learned quite a bit if Icelandic history. The first part gave us a great overview of history while the second section detailed a well known saga. The artwork was interesting, some exhibits were interactive, and the audio guide was very informative. In addition, the staff was extremely helpful. It was a great way to walk off our meal!

Two nice audio guide-based exhibitions, about 30 min each. One telling the violent story of Egil Skallagrimson with small wooden figures, (better than it sounds) the other telling the story of the settlement of Iceland with maps , example models of Viking ships etc. draws you in. Not for small children.
