Owner description: Offering a wealth of information, the Settlement Center provides a wonderful insight into Iceland’s history. It also gives you the chance to put your visit into the context of the country’s past. It also houses a cozy licensed restaurant, a café and a souvenir shop. The Center consists of three buildings, the warehouse, the merchant house and the reception hall. The exhibitions recreate the fascinating drama of the sagas and the birth of this island nation. They also bring to life one of Iceland’s most important cultural treasures, Egils Saga. There are two entertaining and educational exhibitions at the Settlement Center. While one tells the story of the first settlers, the other reveals the story of Iceland’s most important saga – Egils Saga. Egill Skalla-Grimson was a famous Viking and poet, and his saga is closely linked to the settlement period, as his father was one of the first settlers.

Two floors of exhibits, one on the viking settlement of Iceland, the other on the Saga of Erik. Both well arranged with good audio guides.

We thought the museum was very interesting and creatively put together. It was our first stop in Iceland and gave us a good introduction to the country and to the story of the landscape around. I've given an extra dot for the amazing cafe - we stopped three times while in the area and the food was uniformly good and good value. The vegetarian lunch buffet was particularly nice, especially the bread.

The exhibits were good, but it seems that every time we turned around there was yet something else to buy.

The Settlement Centre was really fun and informative, you have headphones as the guide and each part takes around 30 mins. I learnt so much! We also ate lovely food in the restaurant that wasn't really expensive. Very friendly staff too : )

I know audio guide tours are not for everyone. It takes patience for some people. But we loved the carved wooden figures and story attatched to the visitor's gallery. There is a brief part which makes you simulate being on the front of a viking ship. Really cool. So was the folk art depictions of the saga's. Those with a short attention span or not really into vikings may second think the audio guide tour. For the rest of us, give it a try for the first gallery before buying the whole package.
