Owner description: Offering a wealth of information, the Settlement Center provides a wonderful insight into Iceland’s history. It also gives you the chance to put your visit into the context of the country’s past. It also houses a cozy licensed restaurant, a café and a souvenir shop. The Center consists of three buildings, the warehouse, the merchant house and the reception hall. The exhibitions recreate the fascinating drama of the sagas and the birth of this island nation. They also bring to life one of Iceland’s most important cultural treasures, Egils Saga. There are two entertaining and educational exhibitions at the Settlement Center. While one tells the story of the first settlers, the other reveals the story of Iceland’s most important saga – Egils Saga. Egill Skalla-Grimson was a famous Viking and poet, and his saga is closely linked to the settlement period, as his father was one of the first settlers.

As someone who hasn't read the sagas, nor really showed an interest, I wasn't overly enthusiastic about visiting here.

I was pleasently surprised! All of the exibits are well thought out, and theres some fantastic models / scuptures by local artists. They have obviously spent alot of money on the place (plasma TV's, ace lighting, etc). The audio guide is fantastic, and in a wide variety of languages. Great gift shop too!

My only downer was that the price isn't advertised anywhere, and it was more than I was expecting (about $20). Would recommend to most people tho.

We visited the Settlement House on our last day in Iceland the end of May. What a great ending to our Icelandic adventure. We had read so much history about Iceland during our travels and our different hosts had told us so much about the sagas. The museum tied each together and answered a few questions that we still had. It was very well done. Being seniors, we appreciated a reduced price, although we felt it was normally reasonably priced.

This museum has two separate parts, one about Icelandic history and the other about sagas, each with its own admission fee and audio headset. Visiting the history part first helps the saga part make more sense. We recommend both, as together the relationship between the two became clearer. Each took around 20 or 30 minutes. The arty way that the saga figures were constructed from scrap lumber amused us.

The audio guide and the exhibits themselves make such imaginative use of art, narration, lighting and technology to tell their stories. One exhibit tells of Iceland's early history and the other shows and tells about events from one of the sagas. Each exhibit takes about a half hour to go through, and it's worth doing both.

We also really enjoyed the restaurant. We chose the lunch buffet, but the other choices looked good too. The gift shop was in a lovely space and had some items that we didn't see elsewhere.

This tour is really interesting, even for a local like me, so I highly recommend it for anyone interested in learning about the settlement and the life of the first vikings in Iceland!
