Ensku Husin Guesthouse

My partner and I stayed at the Ensku Husin for my birthday. The charm of the old building was apparent from the very start, set in its own grounds by the side of a river. The timber building is welcoming, and yet, for me, strange, like you had just stepped back in time. That does not mean to say that the place is dated in its quality of service; it had a timelessness that gave it a magical feel. The historic house is matched by the nearby historic town of Borgarnes, with its associations with Egil's Saga. It seems the sagas are never far away in Iceland. The service was first class, and the food had the unique quality of being locally produced by the family who run it (the lamb is to die for!). As a family run business Ensku Husin goes out of its way to be welcoming and friendly to their guests. The beautiful countryside is still and peaceful and in summer the sun shines throughout the night (or at least it seems that way, but good curtains aids a good night's sleep. I would gladly recommend this place to anyone who wants something a bit special and out of the ordinary. I will certainly be back; maybe with the rest of the family next time.

Taking a trip around Iceland this summer and we came across this pretty hotel. The place is not a big place, but it's not a battery cage as other reviews have made out. The location is amazing, so we spent most of our time outside on small trips that the staff help us to arrange. The food was good, you do pay for it which can be a suprise if your not used to Icelandic prices - but the price is comparable to other places we've stayed in on this trip. The staff were very friendly, all speak good English and had some good stories to tell about the site the hotel is on.

Overall, glad we stayed here on our Icelandic tour of 2011, and we will certainly stay here again next time we visit.

Yes, it has a sort of 'old world charm.' Yes, it is in a beautiful location. But the owners of Ensku Husin have attempted to cram as many rooms as they can into what is effectively an oversized wooden shack from the early 20th century.

Our room was very small, with little or no soundproofing. We laughed early in the evening when we could hear the French voices on one side and the Swiss on the other. We weren't laughing later on though - the Swiss fellow could impersonate a diesel engine ticking over with his snoring. It honestly sounded as though he was in the same room as us - even the French people banged on our wall thinking it was us! At 11 in the evening I tried to find a member of staff to try and get us moved, but to no avail. the place was deserted. We got precious little sleep and there was only the girl who cleaned the rooms around the next morning to express our disgust.

To top it off, we had dinner there. The most expensive and least enjoyable meal we had in Iceland. The Settlement Centre in Borganes is twice as good and two-thirds the cost.

We stayed in three different Icelandic Farm Holiday properties during our break - thankfully the other two were miles ahead of this place. My advice is don't waste your money here.

We stayed in this place for a night on our way back to Reykjavik after a 2 week tour.
Room (with private facilities) was nice although a little cramped. Everything was clean, and owners were very friendly.

We didn't have supper in this place having read previous reviews, but pricing seems to still be very high (even for iceland) judging by the menu that they have in the entrance.

Breakfast buffet was fine.
Free wireless internet, but bad reception in the room and very slow...

Me and my girlfriend stayed in Ensku Husin for a few days this summer and were very pleased with our stay there. We found the inn's historic feel and rustic charme quite appealing, and can fully recommend it. Our room was a little small but clean and homely, and the beds were comfy. The staff was helpful and eager to share their insight of the inn and surrounding area. In the evening we had dinner at the inn's restaurant where we ate lamb and salmon, which was excellent.

We drove off the highway and approach this "inn" like hotel which looks absolutely plain. However, once you go inside, it is very pretty and rich of culture. Very nice and relaxing environment! The brochure for this hotel is "The English Houses", they have recently added 2 rooms at the end of the compound. It is right by a lake which was very very pretty and relaxing!! I would come back and stay again. The owner came and introduce himself and told us about the history of the house and made our dinner. The food was very fresh and we enjoyed dinner very much. It was a little $$$ but not particular outrages in iceland standard. The bathroom in our room is new and very clean. The only draw back is the bed is a little saggy. The staff all speak English and was helping us to book difference activities without extra charges.

This is one of the worst farms we stayed in during our 2 weeks round trip in Iceland. After 2 weeks we were used to the "basic comfort" of the icelandic farm rooms ... small rooms with separate beds, shared bathroom, ugly interiors, we had all this seen before ... but this one couldn't even meet our lowest expectations. We only managed to sleep some hours. It was extremely noisy, walls were paper thin, you could hear your neighbour snoring, people talking downstairs at the dining room until late in the night and yet at 5 o' clock in the morning. The door of our room couldn't be locked, the shower was terrible, ... but, the worst part, the part you should and can avoid, even when you stay here, is the kitchen !!! Don't eat at this place, even if it's free, and believe me, it isn't. It is extremely expensive and you get worse than crap, even a hamburger at the local petrol station is a better choice. We got some too spiced soup which could have been everything. The salmon we were served was black fried in a pan, but still raw, and this for 60 euro ! When told, they just baked it some blacker! What a rip off !!! In leaving, we didn't try the desert, I had a glimpse into the kitchen and could'n believe my eyes : had this guy ever heard of hygiene ? Off course he baked the whole evening in the same pan, now I understood why his salmon was so black fried. You understand, even if you have to sleep here for some reason, which I would not recommend, never try to stay here for eating !!
